My Last Nerve #25 by Blackbird

”Her. Yes!” I point at Kit.  ”The minute Bette walks through that door, she’s turning right back around, and getting shot with a GPS tracking chip at the vet’s office.”  I pull the trigger on my imaginary gun. ”I’m serious. Bang!  Right under her skin.”

”Ouch!” Shane slaps at her neck.

Mary laughs at the thought. ”You know, they’ll want your pet’s name for the radar thingy.”

”For the tracking number! She’s right.” Alice lures me, ”Bette’s pet name, what do you call her?”

Shane breaks in, ”Not tonight.  Layoff a little, Alice.”

Tears fall down my face, and taking my hands in hers Kit searches my eyes. ”She’s coming home to you, Tina, and when she does, you can call her anything you like, but definitely get the tracking chip. We’ll all feel better the minute she has one.”

    homeless couple under bridge

    Under the Bridge – Bette

In the thirty minutes since escaping, a plan has emerged for my survival. Put as much real estate between me and the SheBeast as I can, and two, whenever possible, stay in the shadows, and three, make it to the bridge – alive.

After walking nearly a mile, we approach the homeless encampment, and the woman slows her squeaking grocery cart. ”I’ll vouch for you, as much as my word’s worth anything, but they don’t let just anyone in, especially after dark.”

”What’d you say your name was?”

    ”I didn’t, but it’s Danielle.”

”Danielle, I’ve got this,” I assure her.  And with one cowboot on and my other one missing, I limp past the gauntlet of bearded men at the entrance and enter the homeless camp, as if I belong.

    homeless reading in tent

In the semi darkness, I thread my way past wood and twisted metal makeshift shelters that are straight out of a Jodi Lerner sculpture.  A baby cries nearby, a mother sings a lullaby, and the unsettling feeling of my nightmare breaks when Danielle stops near a woman reading in her tent.

She points to a faded piece of red carpet. ”This is us. Make yourself comfortable.”

Sensing the irony, I ease my bruised body down on the rug covered concrete. ”How long’ve you been here?”

    ”Under this bridge, three months.”

    ”Before that?”

    ”Down San Diego way.”

”How many miles to West Hollywood?”

CVU – When some unknown forces is on your side, you’ll get the result you needed in an instant.
Who would’ve known a bunch of crumpled receipt from the trash. Not to much of a lead
to begin with it? Can lead to the missing person! I can almost tastes Bette relief when she
see the car with her family in it. And Tina’s prayers got answered.
But amidst the chaos, Tina still remember the chip thing?
“The Hospital or The Vet” Really? hahaha

Why I like your story. . .: Your writing style is marvelous with very compelling story lines. Terrific action sequences & lots of suspense!!
Truly enjoyed the “family” scene with Tina, Mary and the friends, coming to Tina’s aide. Her anguish over the past & my heart goes out to Tina not knowing positively if Bette is still alive & in what condition.
I will also comment that the humour in the chapter was absolutely FANTASTIC!! I laughed so hard at Alice & her comments & then Tina stating that she’s going to make Bette get a tracking chip! The great rescue scene with all of them having their moments of fun. OMG – GREAT!
      You really nailed thus one!
So glad to see the T & B back together. Knew you would find a way for them to reunite.
Bette & company need to take the SheBeast & Denbo down asap!
Looking forward to the next installment.
      Thanks

I liked the opening allowing us a glimpse into how Tina is feeling alone in their bedroom. Enjoyed how family/friends use their home as the gathering place for all occasions and this now being used to aide & comfort Tina. Nice touch Tina forgetting herself by letting everyone know Bette likes to wear those cowboy boots to bed…Oh, I saw that coming Alice has a crush on Our Enforcer…Simone. (I hope that develops into something.) The radar tracker under Bette’s skin is so funny…can’t image how you thought of that. Tina: I leap from the car & into Bette’s arms…I have been waiting for that rescue scene which gave me goosebumps…Now time to avenger the SheBeast & take down the Denbo bar…in awe once again of your writing Blackbird.

    4. From Bern via email to me –

Happy Tina et al managed to find Bette in that unexpected situation. I thought Bette was gonna hitch a ride home, so that was nice twist. Was hoping the reunion would be a longer one. Bette appeared to be so relaxed despite the trauma she went thro & it was Tina who practically jumped on her.
Had a good chuckle about the tracker. Perhaps Tina should have it enforced!!
Also hope Bette would beat the shit out of Denbo n SheBeast before they get thrown in the slammer!!
Enjoyed this and can’t wait for your next post!

    5. From Darby via email to me –

So glad to finally have Tina & Bette back together. Get these 2 love birds married!!
Time to take Denbo down & put in jail.
Many of your scenes were just so funny!!
Thank you for a wonderful story

    6. Via email to me from Lollipop –

Finally…reunited in a haze of Xanax, a near death by dangerous driving and a slightly more emotional Mary in a bathrobe! What I loved the most, is that with that small sweet reunion, you have already started to pave the way for the next eagerly anticipated instalment. In what form will the revenge come, how will Bette and Tina act once they are alone and realise they are both safe. And please, please, please tell me there is more to the Alice and Simone story! Just love your writing, looking forward to the next one

I loved the humor in this chapter. It was hysterical. Bette sure is a mess, at least she got away from that crazy monster, sheBeast. I’m so glad Tina found her. Can’t wait for the next chapter. I’m really captivated. You’ve added a few more characters. Interesting! Looking forward to what you do with them, Simone & Danielle.

      • wkm, You are always so light with the words, so when you give me a “she breast” I pay attention! Yes, that is a very good plan! I’ll write Bette meeting up with a she breast. Right away, in fact, I’m on it!

    8. Bern,

My twitter buddy! I’m so glad you liked this one! It was a great story to dream up and hear their amusing banter as the scenes came together. My hope is that lots of people find this story filled with tension and then, enjoy a humorous ride all the way to the end. I look at the stats on my site, and by November 15th it had been read by 412 readers.

Your point about their reunion, I understand, but there’s too much for everyone to do, as you noticed. They’ll have a lovely reunion after their win.

Your point about Bette’s behavior is interesting to me. I never felt her edging toward anything other than an intense focus to get out there, and I never felt her drifting away from escape mode.

Alternatively, Tina had been in the dark for days, and was so anxious. I felt badly for her, but she was very amusing to me toward the end of the tale.

But back to your point about Bette – to me, Bette doesn’t collapse under pressure, and in the last story she smarted off to her captors every chance she got. You may remember in the previous story, “Ensnared by Guilt, her great line to the SheBeast. ” “How ’bout you chew on a fucking breath mint and get me some water.”

I enjoyed reading your comment, and others will enjoy it, too.

    10. Great new comment sent to me via my blog –

Why I like your story. . .: Why I like your story, mmmm there are many reasons.
It is not like any other story.
Bette & Tina are not wimpy, whiney women in your stories.
      You are a true writer.
You are not afraid to go in any direction.
You bring you readers inside their heads which is a fun place to be.
Your scenes are sexy as hell.
You do all the things good writers do, you make your readers feel like they are completely in the moment with your characters.
Please continue soon because I miss being there.
There are many more reasons but I will stop here.
      No one writes B & T better…no one!
