New York Minute – chapter 39

    “Is it a problem ?”

“I hurt her by saying dumb as things – she bought a dress for a corporate thing the other week. I was the one who told her she looked like an explosion in a paint factory in it “

Tina smiled “ Not tactful “

“It comes out of my mouth before I engage my brain “

“Does Jess mind you not working ?”

“My dad was ill last year so I went back to Melbourne to see him – when I got back the company I worked for had filled for chapter 11 bankruptcy. At the same time our nanny was discovered to have residency problems so she fled into the night . It made sense for me to take care of Bella“

“Do you miss her like I miss Angie ?”

“Yes – I have two options – have another baby which Jess really wants or me to go back to work which is another set of problems to do with dropping her off at school and everything “

“I have been lucky that Bette’s gallery is so close and that she loves taking Angie to school “

“You don’t want another baby – you said that Jess does “

“Jess carried Bella – I do want to carry a child but – well I do want to do other things “

    “Such as ?”

“Jess owns three bars, a night club and an import business. I know she loves it because its such a challenge and every day is different – I don’t want to slip into the role of “ just “ being her partner and Bella’s mom “

Tina could empathise with Casey’s feelings – she sipped her coffee

“The beginning of the end – the really dumb idea between Bette and I was me giving up my job as film development executive so I could prepare my body to get pregnant. Looking back now I don’t think it made any difference to when I got pregnant and what happened was that Bette’s job took over our lives and I got resentful “

Casey nodded “I am not naturally bitter but there are times when Jess just assumes that I will do something because I am not working “
