    The one where Bette and Tina go to dinner

    “I respected your wish not to talk about them “

    The waiter delivered their drinks – Tina chuckled and immediately took a sip of hers

    “That is really nice “

    “You sure you wouldn’t rather have the alcoholic version ?”

    “No  – if its good enough for you its good enough for me “

    Bette sipped the drink and smiled “That is good “

    Tina picked up the menu and studied it – she fancied something like fish or chicken.

    “Have you been here before ?” Tina asked

    “No – but I have seen pictures of it – no point coming to somewhere like this if there is not someone to share the experience with “

    “I still cannot believe that you didn’t date for so long “

    “I didn’t want to – none of them were you and well – I needed the time on my own to figure myself out”

    “And you did “

    “And I did “ Bette agreed

    “Shall I tell you something “

    “Of course “

    “The reason I didn’t talk about my folks was that I don’t think I trusted myself to carry through a lie. It was easier to say that I didn’t want to talk about it rather than concoct a lie that I would then have to remember the next time the subject came up – I didn’t want to do that. I justified not telling the real story by telling myself that at least I wasn’t lying to you “

    “I guess it was easier because of my family problems “

    “Well yeah – we were both so alienated from our families – that was why our lesbian family meant so much to me. Having them not understand why I wanted you back hurt “

    “We have Shane back “

    Tina smiled “ You and her have always had a connection – I think she missed you a lot. She was probably the only one who talked about you with fondness “

    “Yeah – well –  Alice and I have parted ways “

    “That’s a shame “

    “That is her problem and not mine. If she cannot deal with her guilt about the way she treated me – then – tough.”

    “Did you think the others would stay in touch ?”
