Bette let her hands drop from Tina’s as she nervously fumbled in her pockets for the phone. She closed her eyes tightly before looking at the caller ID. She was hoping it would be the Hospice nurse and not Sara’s sister. She was in no way ready to travel down that road just yet. She let a sigh of relief escape from her mouth as she immediately recognized the number that scrolled across the screen.
Bette: Thank God.
Kit: Baby sis that is the warmest welcome you’ve ever given me.
Bette: It’s just nice to hear your voice.
Kit: Funny thing, if you ever picked up a phone and called me, you’d get to hear this beautiful voice more often.
Bette cracked a small smile in Tina’s direction.
Kit: So, I’m gonna be in town on Thursday and I thought maybe we could have dinner.
Bette: I’m actually in Florida.
Kit: What? For how long?
Bette began walking toward the living room, hoping to find a comfortable place to sit. This would be a long conversation.
Bette: I don’t know really. A few days, a few weeks maybe.
Kit: Are you working down there?
Bette: Not exactly.
Kit: Why are you being so vague?
Bette: Why are you coming to New York?
Kit: Do you always answer questions with questions?
Bette: I don’t have time for this Kit, why are you coming to New York?
Bette could hear her older sister sigh on the other end of the phone. She knew that sigh.
Bette: What? What’s wrong?
Kit: He’s up for parole.
It took a moment to register in Bette’s brain what exactly her sister had just said.
Bette: But, I don’t understand.
Kit: I got a letter in the mail that Dad’s up for parole Bette.
Bette: Melvin, Melvin is up for parole.
Bette would never call him Dad, never again.
Kit: Yes.
All color drained from Bette’s face and her hands began to shake. She didn’t know what to say. Her eyes roamed the room looking for Tina, needing desperately a hand to hold. This was too much. Between Sara and Melvin, Bette didn’t know which end was up.
Kit: Bette? Are you there?
Nothing.
Kit: *****. I hate this damn phone! I swear to God

Wow! Can we stack any more on poor Bette? Thankfully she has a great support crew, but will she actually use it is the big question and let Tina and the crew be there for her instead of trying to be Super Bette? Good to see you again Flair!

awsome chapter. only certain dramatic things can move her and get her vulnerable especially with those who has had a hard life. well… it surely doesn’t apply to everyone cos we all do deal differently (or run in some cases).
