    No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

“Oh, blast,”  There was a thump and a scrape as Tina woke up. She had been sleeping in the media room on the sofa, having drifted off watching a silly rom-com with a holiday theme. She sat up and frowned. She’d been sleeping most of the afternoon, apparently. The shadows were longer. But who was making that noise? That voice sounded… British. Could it be?

Tina turned slightly and looked over her shoulder. Another thump and a giggle.

“Boo, could you please get out from under my feet?” There was Bette’s voice.

Yet another thump. Bette groaned. “Helena, watch my floor!”

“Sorry, sorry. A needle pricked me.”

Tina got up and ran a hand through her hair and shuffled out to the foyer, blinking a few times to make sure she wasn’t dreaming.

“Oh, you’re up,” Bette was winded, smiling. A tree lay on its side in the entryway. Angie stood near Bette, giggling. Helena was at the foot of the tree, dressed entirely too nicely to be hauling greenery around.

“Hello,” Helena said cheerily. “We’ve got your tree!”

    Tina smiled tightly.“So I see.”

“I left the stand in the car. I’ll just go get it,” Bette said, ducking out the front door again.

Helena smiled at Tina again, somewhat apologetically. “Bette had the idea that you would be pleased by the surprise. She called and asked me to help… I suspect because no one else was available,” Helena laughed.

“It’s fine,” Tina said. “I was just asleep on the couch. I would have gladly come along. I don’t know why Bette wouldn’t wake me. Oh well.” Tina looked down at the tree. It was just the right size, not too large or too wide. “It looks great. The perfect size.”

“You can thank Bette’s perfectionism for that. We must have looked at every tree on the lot. Twice. You didn’t miss much,” Helena said in a confidential tone. “She just needed me to help her carry it. I don’t think she was interested in my opinion at all.”

Tina placed a hand on Helena’s arm. “I’m sure you were a big help… or tried to be. So thanks. It’s a beautiful tree.”
