The Gift
Tina paused in the hallway, listening. She could hear Bette talking to Kit in the kitchen. Perfect.
She crept into the bedroom and shut the door for privacy. Tip-toeing over to the closet, she began to rummage around, looking for any boxes or bags that had not been there before. She knew Bette had hidden her Christmas gifts somewhere and even though it was immature, she couldn’t resist a peek. She was stumped on what to buy for Bette, and if she had an idea of what Bette was going to give her, she could at least try to match the gifts in quality.
She was digging in the closet, coming up short. There was nothing in here. When Tina backed out and stood up, she let out a yelp when she saw Bette standing in the bedroom with crossed arms and a sardonic expression.
“Tina? What exactly were you doing in the closet just now?”
When Tina was a little girl, she had learned quickly that whenever she was in trouble, the best thing to do was to own up to her actions. So she did that now, since she was totally caught.
“I was looking for Christmas gifts,” she said bluntly.
Bette snickered. “Are you six years old? Besides, you ought to know that I wouldn’t keep them in the closet, anyway. I’m way ahead of you, T – I know all about your weakness when it comes to secrets. Any gift for you has to be hidden, and hidden well.”
“Okay, look. You might as well know. I had a good reason for trying to take a peek.”
“Oh? What what’s that?”
“Well,” Tina shifted her weight from one foot to another. “I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t undergifting.”
Bette cocked an eyebrow. “Undergifting?”
“Yeah. As in, I don’t want you to get me something super nice and I get you something a lot less extravagant.”
“But Tina,” Bette said, “Your undergifting, as you call it, is a given.” There was a teasing lilt to her voice.
Tina narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean?”
“T, let’s just say… well, your gifts are very practical.”
“Practical?” Tina exploded. “You make it sound like I give you mittens and socks or something.”

What a great Xmas present for us. Thank you, o’malley. I loved this episode-heck, I loved all of them, but this was my fav. Thank you.
This was one terrific story. Thank you!!
Thanks for this Christmas gift. Awesome post. And I so dont mind if you post Chistmas stories all year round. It’ll be like Christmas every day! Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas
I loved it! Thanks for all the little holiday gifts, they were wonderful.
I loved this story: quasi-angst, pseudo misery – love, hugs and kisses abounding. Thank you for the lovely Christmas present. I enjoyed every minute of reading it!
I very much enjoyed the Christmas stories. I loved all of them. Thank you.
I’d thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this story …love the banter between Bette and Tina (“undergifter”) to Alice’s suggestion of “metal art” gift…What did Bette get for Tina? Thank-you O’Malley for this terrific heart-warming christmas story. Hope you’re having a fantastic festive season!
That was wonderful.
This was beautiful. :o) Thank you!!
That was a wonderful story and so like them. Very lovely. Don’t mean to be a spoil sport, but what did Bette get Tina and what kind of car was it? We could have another chapter to complete this series of stories by telling us what Tinas’ gift was from Bette and what kind of car Bette got? How they all enjoyed the drive and Bette and Tinas special “thank you” when they went to bed, or at least a hint of it. Thanks for posting.
I loved the big reveal! Count me in the camp that wants a sequel. :) thanks :)
This was such a cute story. Thanks!
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this story! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, o’malley!
What a heartwarming story. I love it. Thanks for this post.
Excellent Christmas stories! Ya know….the Christmas season extends into January too…..that means you can write us more stories! Please!
Em…Omalley…what did Bette give T for X’mas? Oh, please do tell…This was simply delightful. I think my fav X’mas story of 2009. The entire premise of “undergifting”, competetiveness, Tina’s predicament, the gang’s solution, and the build up to Bette getting the car (I was holding my breath on that one)…was so great! Best of all, your dialoque is so real and just shows the connection we love in Tibette. So well done! Love your writing…and yes, I’d take your stories 365 days a year…no pressure. LOL! Merry X’mas!!!
great holiday story…oh btw what kind of car was it? and what did bette get for tina?
Awesome Brilliant Story. Thank you. Loved it. Merry Christmas and the Happiest of the New Year to you Omalley. Thank you for your wonderful stories.
Awesome! Another cute one! All these years later!
