    No More Stalling: Part 7

Candace pulled into a parking space in front of the club. She shut off the ignition and turned to face Bette in the passenger seat. Look we dont have to go in. Ill just call Mikela and tell her Im not feeling well.

No, its fine. Candace, I want to meet your friends. Im sure they are not at all like Yolanda. Bette laid her hand over Candaces.

Are you sure you dont want to tell me what she said to upset you so much?

    Bette shook her head.

Did she tell you to stay away from me?

Among other things, Bette said, retracting her hand. But look, I can deal with Yolanda. Ive been dealing with Yolandas all my life. Im not going to let her get to me. And Im not going to put you in the middle. Come on lets go in. Bette stepped out of the car and smoothed out the back of her skirt.

Candace joined Bette on the sidewalk and a light breeze carried the sounds of women laughing and talking as they gathered in front of the club.

Hey, perfect timing. Mikela called out as she approached with her arm around Yasemin. Mikelas girlfriend was super-thin and caramel in color. Her hair was done up in twists and she had piercing eyes that gave Bette a once over.

Hi, Candace leaned in and kissed Mikela on the cheek. Mikela, you remember Bette? And Bette this is Yasemin.

Bette gave Mikela a warm embrace and turned to Yasemin. Nice to meet you, Bette smiled.

So how was dinner? How was Yolanda? Mikela asked looking back and forth between Bette and Candace.

Candace winced, but Bette answered politely and completely without animocity. She looked great. Shes really gotten huge, but I guess its getting close to the big day.

Candaces looked over at Bette and one side of her mouth turned up in a rye smile. She took Bettes hand and squeezed it. Come on, lets go in.

The sounds of Meshell Ndegeocello filled the car as Candace steered through the nearly empty streets back to Bettes hotel. Bette leaned over towards Candace and let her fingers tease absentmindedly through Candaces hair.
I really enjoyed hanging out with Mikela. Shes very sweet and I loved talking with her about art, Bette mused.

She was an art history major, Candace said keeping her eyes on the road.

She mentioned that. And that you were an architecture major who flirted with her at UCLA.

Well, she told you everything, huh? Candace laughed.

I can tell she really cares about you, Bette said.

Yeah, but not in that psycho way that Yolanda does, Candace said stealing a quick glance at Bette before her eyes focused steadily back on the road.

Yolanda cares about you, too. She just has a vicious way of showing it. Bette withdrew her hand as Candace slowed for a stop

Bette, Im sorry, Candace turned and looked at Bettes face illuminated by the streetlight.

Forget it. Bette stared out the window at the line of red traffic lights stretched ahead of them. Tina always made me drive. Bette said quietly.

Did that bother you? Candace asked.

No, not really, most of the time, Bette turned and looked at Candace with her arm resting on the steering wheel. But it was always expected. Tina always just expected me to take charge, be in control. To take care of her, I guess. Actually, at first that was one of the things that I found myself really attracted to. But over time it just weighed on me. Like a lot of pressure.

But you like to be in control, Candace teased as the light turned green and she continued to drive.

Thats not true, Bette laughed somewhat embarrassed. Not all of the time. I like someone who can surprise me every now and again.

As they rounded the corner into the hotel parking lot, they both were quiet and listened to the haunting lyrics of the music playing.

Candace pulled into a space and looked over at Bette while the engine idled. Do you want me to come in?

I cheated on Tina one month after she miscarried, Bette turned her head completely away from Candace. How can you want to be with someone who would do that?

Bette, Candace whispered. Bette, is that what Yolanda said to you?

    Bette stayed silent.

Candace shook her head. Im sorry. God, Im so sorry. Im the one she should make feel awful. Im the home wrecker. I shouldnt have kissed you. I shouldnt have taken you to that bed and breakfast. *****, Im such a steamroller sometimes

Im just so afraid Im going to end up hurting you too. I cant Bette stammered. Maybe she is right.

Bette, I could get hurt with anybody. Its a risk Im willing to take. Candace took her hand. Please, let me take you upstairs.

Exhausted, Bette had immediately fallen soundly asleep in Candaces arms. When she awoke, her head throbbed from too many drinks at the club. Besides the dull pound in her head, Bette initially had a strange sensation of not remembering where she was. As her eyes adjusted she remembered this was the hotel and the arms around her were Candaces.

Bette slipped out of Candaces warm embrace and sat up to watch her sleeping.
After she showered and dressed, Bette sat down and scratched a short note on the hotel stationary pad left by the phone. Giving Candace a kiss on the forehead, she left the note beside Candace on the pillow and quietly left the hotel room.

    1. Not sure where this is going but it is interesting so far…I’ll read the next installment and get a better idea…I know many of us don’t want a Bette & Candace scenario, however I do salute you for at least trying…although you still have the opening to reunite B&T…not sure if T would go for it but please continue.
