Old Friends Chapter 24
So, you never got the results?
Yes, I did. That was the envelope you found me crying over that night.
Was she? Tina asked quietly.
I dont know. Ive never opened the envelope. Funny, I carry it with me everywhere I go. It stays in a compartment of my carry-on bag. Ive never been able to open it.
Dont you want to know?
I know I need a drink. Alex said as she got off the bed and went into the kitchen area. Opening a bottle of wine, Alex gulped down the first glass and refilled it almost to the top. You guys want a drink? She called to Bette and Tina.
Tina and Bette waited until they realized Alex would not return to the bedroom. They found her drinking her wine and staring out the window at the LA skyline. I cant live with knowing. How do you live with knowing that your selfishness killed not only your wife and your dog, but you also killed your baby? Or, as an alternative, your selfishness denied your wife the chance, if only for a few days, to be what she wanted most to be: pregnant.
Alex stared out the window continuing her confession almost as if Bette and Tina were not in the room. I had done my research and knew where Janos lived. I parked outside of his house and just watched for 2 days. He has a wife and 2 daughters. His wife is brunette like Catherine, about the same build. I got the chance to see what our daughter might have looked like. I followed him to where he worked and introduced myself. He remembered. I told him that I thought he would like to know that he had no other children. He thanked me, told me he had never told his wife about it. It would destroy her to know that he had a child with someone else even though it was platonic. I saw his face, it was a relief for him to hear that Catherine was never able to have his child. Not that I blame him, who would want to know that they had a child out there somewhere that they would never know.
Her final confession complete, Alex finished her glass of wine and sank to the floor. Emotionally, she finally succumbed to the exhaustion of carrying her burden.

Finally, the truth will set her free. I’m glad she was able to open up, now maybe she’ll be able to work on the guilt to the point where she will no longer need to medicate herself. Thanks for sharing, and I’m looking forward to how Bette can be the supporting friend Alex deserves.
What a secret to carry around. Poor Alex. Thanks for putting Bette and Tina back together. I hope you let them put Alex back together.
