She’d gotten very good at it.

    Or.. so she’d thought.

They’d been on the surface for nearly an hour when it began.

And it began, as things often did with Bette, with curiosity. A cluster of vivid purple flowers. A fine golden mist rising from the blooms. Her tricorder hummed as she crouched beside them.

”Captain, these spores… this pollen structure… they’re unlike anything I’ve seen–” She trailed off, frowning at the readings. ”I think we should–”

A breeze moved through the clearing, and the sentence ended there.

Bette straightened abruptly, the tricorder almost slipping from her hands.

”Captain…” Her voice was an octave lower than it should have been, her cheeks flushed deep. ”Something’s…” she glanced down at the diagnostic device. ”Rapid onset. Neural receptors. I’m–” she stopped, shaking her head.

Tina’s jaw tightened. She could feel it too. It hit her like a phaser on low stun.. a slow burn unfurled in her chest, spreading downward, settling heavy between her legs. But she locked it down. The way she’d been locking things down for years. She looked past Bette to where Ensigns Nùñez and Schecter had moved ahead on the path, clear and unaffected.

”Nùñez.” Her voice somehow came out steady. ”Take point. Get us back to the shuttle and prep for immediate departure.”

She waited until they were out of earshot.

Then turned back to Bette. One look.

    ”You too.”

They moved quickly.. or tried to. The path back felt longer, the air denser, the light through the canopy strange and golden. Bette stumbled once, hand shooting out to catch a tree trunk. Tina caught her elbow before she went down, pulled her upright, and their eyes met and held.

The pollen had stripped everything back. No rank. No rules. Just the hunger they’d each been carrying for years, suddenly and catastrophically out in the open.

”Captain, I–” Her voice was unsteady. ”I can’t think straight. It’s like…” She searched for the word. ”Fire.”

Tina’s grip tightened. ”I know.” She leaned in, close enough that their breaths mingled. ”But you’re going to walk. And when we get back, I’m going to take care of you.” She held her gaze. ”Understood?”

    Bette swallowed hard. ”Yes, Captain.”

When they reached the ship, Dr. Williams met them at the bay doors, ran the scans, and cleared all four of anything contagious.

    1. If this is a stand alone I really enjoyed it, but if you are going to continue it was a very exciting way to begin a new fic. I also like that Tina is The Captain this time. Long time Star Trek fan
