“How can you look so nervous – she’s a 17 year old – not a hanging judge”
Matthew exhaled and smiled at his partner.
“I want her to like me “
“I imagine she feels the same way “ Pete said
“And you don’t want her to like you as well ?” Matthew teased. “She’s your little girl too. You love her to bits “
“I do – I have never seen anyone grow up before – I remember meeting her on what had to be our second or third date. We came here and went for a walk and she was this chatty little girl – how old was she ?”
“She was 4 – we have been together 13 years next month “
“I know that – we have plans “
“I know we do – 13 years ago – she was 4 and she idolised her dad and that was a side to you that I had never seen before and I loved that part of you that watched her and took her hand when we crossed the road and you gave her anything she wanted. I remember waking up with her sleeping between us and she was so bouncy and happy. What damn time machine did we get into that suddenly made her a lesbian”
“There are three gay lawyers who think exactly the same Pete – she’s a beautiful young woman now and it suddenly seems to have happened”
“Do you know anything about this Bette ?”
Matthew smiled at Pete “ That sounds like a question that Queen Bee Emma would ask. What I know is what Tina has told me – she is the daughter of two people who they were at college with – you must know Melvin Porter “
“I do- he is a good man in my opinion. I know he’s got a reputation but he’s always been decent in the cases when I have come against him”
“Well she is his daughter – his wife and Kate and Emma shared an apartment when they were first undergraduates. They hung around for a while but Melvin and Emma hated one another so they went their own ways “
“And are there still issues with Melvin ?”
“Yes – Rosemary is back in Emma and Kate’s life and they are very close and they often go out together. Melvin is more of a problem”

Thanks for the update as it was simply wonderful. The way you write about the details of their relationship and the timing of the different events of their journey with everything that it involves including all the parents is fantastic! Keep up the awesome work! This story is one of the best!
Wow. Even the parents that Tina *doesn’t* live with get to greet them as a couple! Bette must think Melvin is a complete and utter monster. I can see why Emma and Kate would be in on letting the girls keep their relationship hush-hush – they perhaps don’t like Melvin, based on views that he had when he was a young man, even though he’s apparently grown out of them and changed now – but why is Rosemary in on keeping secrets from her husband? If he’s that bad that it’s worth keeping secrets about their *only child* – that he “dotes on” – why is she still married to him? Is he that bad of a father? Is he that bad of a man? To be in collusion with other “adults” is baffling – especially when your daughter being happy and in love is something to be CELEBRATED, not hidden as if they’re doing something wrong! It’s okay not to like someone – there’s no law that says you have to be friends with the people your spouse is friends with. The adults either need to get together and hash it out, or they need to let the whole thing go. It’s ancient history and Rosemary is letting the relationship in her FAMILY, between her husband and daughter, be compromised over something that doesn’t matter anymore. She should be encouraging Bette to talk to Melvin… after all, if Bette and Tina stay together, he’s going to be gaining another daughter someday. (Or would they keep a future wedding a secret too? Secret kids?) Argh! Lol. Rant over. What is Bette going to tell her parents about the upcoming weekend she’s about to spend out of the house? She is still a minor, right? She can’t just come and go as she pleases for days at a stretch in a city like New York without letting her parents know, so that should be interesting. It’s maybe the opening she needs, because the whole thing has gone on long enough. Anyway… thanks for the post. I actually do look for this story pretty regularly. Cheers!
