Out of Closet (B&T time-travel romance), Ch. 10

The whole week before Katie’s wedding was spent in this polite and civilized atmosphere and many times Elizabeth felt suffocated and un-happy but she knew she could not push Christina into something that neither of them could completely understand. So they both became very careful with each other as if walking on egg-shells and avoiding any of the closeness they used to enjoy before.

Finally, the day of the wedding came. The guests, friends, and family members gathered in the chapel for the ceremony. Elizabeth had been exhausted during the past week because of her complicated situation with Christina and her only sister marrying and moving away. She was present in the chapel but only half-listening to the priest and paying more attention to the rain outside.

After the ceremony was over, the bride and the groom went back to the Porter mansion with all the guests to continue the celebration. The house filled up with people in record time and the servants and lackeys were deftly moving around them, carrying drinks, appetizers and fruits on silver trays.

Elizabeth got up to congratulate the newlyweds. She tried to get everyone’s attention as she raised her champagne flute and said, happy and teary at the same time, “I would like to propose a toast. When I was a little girl, I always thought about Katie, ‘that’s my sister, she can do anything’…I still feel like that right now. She is marrying a great and noble man, she’s the most talented singer I’ve ever heard in my entire life, but most importantly…,” Elizabeth’s voice cracked a little but she tightened her grip on the flute and continued, “…most importantly, she’s the best sister I could ever ask for. I lift my glass to caring, kindness, trust and respect, to all the things you need to keep your love alive. I wish you happiness and I hope that you forever spare each other pain. To the happy couple…”

She went to give Katie a kiss and presented her with a wrapped painting. “Please, open it when you get to your new home,” Elizabeth whispered in Katie’s ear, hugging her tightly, “I did my best, but I’d prefer that you would open it later. I don’t want to be embarrassed.”

    4. I was thinking of this story today and then, when I next check the site, this chapter had been posted. Thank you for this post and, as I have said in prior comments, thanks for resurrecting this story. I have so very much wanted to find out what happens. I guess that whenever I want a new chapter I should think about the story and a post will appear? Oh–such power! I will think about your story on Sunday. A chapter will follow, right? All silliness aside–I love how you weave the two time periods together, with events from the past being reflected in the future. PPS.
