Out of Closet (B&T time-travel romance), Ch. 10

Katie hugged her back with tears on her cheeks but happiness in her eyes, “Okay, baby sister. I will open it at home if you promise me you will come and visit me as often as you can.”

“I promise,” Elizabeth said smiling through her tears, “It’s only 50 miles on a very good road. It is a very easy distance, especially with my horse or a carriage. I’ll be visiting you every day and you’ll beg me to stop coming.”

“Never,” Katie said firmly but tenderly, “You are my baby sister and I love you. You can come and stay in my new home any time you want.”

Other people were waiting patiently to congratulate Katie and David, and Elizabeth loosened her grip and smiled again, knowing that her sister’s happiness meant more to her than her own misery.

As the evening went on, Elizabeth began to feel very vulnerable and emotional and she decided to go outside for some fresh air. The rain finally stopped and the air around was filled with the scent of autumn leaves and grass, freshly baked apple pies and wet sequoia bark.

Elizabeth didn’t want to go to the garden, her usual place of solitude, because a lot of guests were following Maxine around who was showing them the pavilions and bridges with pride and joy written all over her face. Elizabeth decided to retire into a small chapel on the west side of the mansion that Melvin ordered to be built for private family occasions.

Bette walked inside, sat down on one of the benches and closed her eyes, listening to the happy chirping of the birds outside and her own sad thoughts on the inside. ‘I know she’s happy and I want her to be happy, but it’s different to have her with me all the time in the house and visit her, knowing that at the end of the evening I have to leave. I like solitude sometimes, but I hate loneliness. I know I still have my parents and I love them dearly, but father is always away and when he’s home I can’t have playful and enjoyable conversations with him because he’s always in his study. And mother has been busy with her art projects and socializing in the local women’s club that she recently joined, following that modern feminism trend.’

    4. I was thinking of this story today and then, when I next check the site, this chapter had been posted. Thank you for this post and, as I have said in prior comments, thanks for resurrecting this story. I have so very much wanted to find out what happens. I guess that whenever I want a new chapter I should think about the story and a post will appear? Oh–such power! I will think about your story on Sunday. A chapter will follow, right? All silliness aside–I love how you weave the two time periods together, with events from the past being reflected in the future. PPS.
