“Having fun?”  Alice’s familiar voice startled Dana out of her reverie as she sat on the steps beside the pool outside Bette and Tina’s house.

Dana smiled to herself and answered without turning around.  “I just needed a breather from all the excitement.”  From where she sat, she could still hear the music and conversation flowing from the Y2K party inside.  She checked her watch and saw that it was 2:00a.m.  “I guess it’s safe to say that the world didn’t come to an end, despite the predictions,” she said, making room on the step so that Alice could sit beside her.

“Yeah, it’s kind of disappointing,” Alice said with a laugh as she lowered herself onto the step.

Dana shot Alice a quizzical look.  “Disappointing?” she asked incredulously.  “You wanted the world to come crashing down around our ears?”

“No, but it would have been nice for the lights to flicker or something,” Alice responded.  “You know, it seemed like a lot of build-up with no pay-off.  Like sex without an orgasm.”

Dana grinned in silent agreement, and wrapped her jacket tighter around herself to keep warm in the chilly night air.

“Speaking of sex,” Alice began, turning around slightly to glance back inside at the partygoers visible through the glass patio doors.  She could just make out Shane, who had resumed her position beside the naked performance artist Bette had hired for the party.  “I think Shane is about to have sex with that artist woman right in the middle of Bette and Tina’s living room,” she said, turning back to face the pool with a low chuckle.  Dana shifted slightly beside her and cleared her throat loudly, causing Alice to glance sideways at her with a teasing grin.  “Does that make you uncomfortable?” she asked.

Dana rolled her eyes at Alice in response.  Alice had relentlessly teased Dana about her orientation ever since they had met a month ago.  Although Dana had initially found Alice’s more direct questions annoying, she was starting to get used to evading them.

“Well, Shane does seem kind of… forward,” she said, choosing her words carefully.  She didn’t want to admit to Alice that she had briefly checked out Shane earlier in the evening while she made out with the performance artist.  It wasn’t that she was particularly interested in Shane; it was just that she’d never seen anyone be so open and free with their sexuality before.  From her own deeply closeted position, Dana envied her.

    1. Wow, so nice to see you posting again! I really liked this… I never got how *Alice*, of all people, could hold herself back for so long (years!) before acting on an attraction to someone. This was a very good take on what might have caused the shift. Thanks for the post, blue. I hope you’re back to writing regularly soon. Cheers

    2. I completely loved this story. I was an avid reader of your Lace stories and I just love your writing. This was so enjoyable, I know you said it’s a one-shot, but I’m hoping a little positive feedback may convince you to continue with it!

    3. that did end so soon. but it was so perfect. i could see it happening just like that. fantastic job. good to see you back as well. and i can’t wait for your danish story.

    4. You’re back! I loved your Lace-stories, but I’m very exited to see you’re going to work on a Danish story! Loved the chemistry between these two in this short story.

    5. hehe. danish. yay.although i’m not liking dana’s interest in melanie, i’m looking forward on the development of the relationship between danish now that dana is out but how much would they ignore the intensity between them…

    6. Hey blue! Pendulums was indeed the perfect title for this very satisfying one-off! Like everyone else, I’m sure you could delight us further with is she/isn’t she situations….but this definitely set the stage perfectly for that great tension that is so obvious now in retrospect! I thought this was finely and realistically crafted (for just a teensy moment I thought you were going to have Dana make a miraculous comeback in her tennis match…which would have been fun…but utterly unrealistic!) And, REALLY loved the door in Alice’s face! Finally, I could just ‘see’ Alice making the comment about Melanie…you truly captured these two in a very engaging story….great to see you posting again!

    7. Yay Blue, wonderful to see you posting again! I’m so glad I caught this fic, and like your chracter development in your stellar Lace writings, the way you portray interaction between Dana and Alice here is delightful–I especially loved the way Dana confides shyly in Alice and feels something shifting between them. And Alice and the door? Classic. So Bravo to you! And if you decide to continue with this, you know, hey, I’d be OK with that;) –your loyal fan
