    Pendulums

“Yeah, Shane is definitely forward,” Alice replied with a laugh.  “And you don’t even know the half of it.”

“So, have you two ever…?” Dana trailed off, uncertain how to finish her question.  She gestured vaguely in the air to make her point.

Alice grinned as she realised what Dana was driving at, but she decided to feign confusion.  “What?” she asked quizzically, leaning a bit closer to Dana on the step.

Dana’s face reddened, partly as a result of being forced to verbalise her thoughts, and partly because of her sudden awareness of Alice’s proximity.  She cleared her throat, and tried to explain.  “You know,” she said, dropping her voice suggestively and nudging Alice’s arm pointedly.

But, Alice refused to let Dana off the hook.  Keeping her mirth hidden, she shook her head in mock-confusion.  “What are you talking about, Dana?” she asked in as naïve a tone as she could muster.  “Have we ever… what?”

“Come on, Alice,” Dana replied, feeling exasperated.  “Have you two ever… been together?” she concluded, inwardly cursing her cowardice.

“Been together doing what?” Alice deadpanned.  Then, seeing the look of utter hopelessness on Dana’s face, she couldn’t stop herself from dissolving into a fit of laughter.

“Fuck you,” Dana retorted, giving Alice a light punch on the arm.

“No, Shane has never done that,” Alice squeaked out in between chuckles as she rubbed her arm.

Dana gave Alice a stern look that quickly melted into a smile when she saw Alice’s laughing face.  Dammit, she thought to herself.  Why does this woman have so much power over me when we’ve only known each other for a few weeks?

As Alice’s laughter subsided, she turned to Dana again.  “Anyway, as for your question about me and Shane having sex?  God, no.  No, definitely not.”  She laughed quietly as she considered the question.  Then, as another thought dawned on her, she lifted her eyes to Dana curiously.  “Why?  Are you interested in Shane?”  As she asked the question, Alice found herself surprised by the sudden jolt of jealousy the thought awakened in her mind.

“What?” Dana asked, taken aback by the question being turned around on her.  “No, I just wondered… you know, you two seem close, and, uh, I thought maybe you’d dated or something.”  Dana cursed inwardly as she felt her cheeks burning as the words tumbled out.

    1. Wow, so nice to see you posting again! I really liked this… I never got how *Alice*, of all people, could hold herself back for so long (years!) before acting on an attraction to someone. This was a very good take on what might have caused the shift. Thanks for the post, blue. I hope you’re back to writing regularly soon. Cheers

    2. I completely loved this story. I was an avid reader of your Lace stories and I just love your writing. This was so enjoyable, I know you said it’s a one-shot, but I’m hoping a little positive feedback may convince you to continue with it!

    3. that did end so soon. but it was so perfect. i could see it happening just like that. fantastic job. good to see you back as well. and i can’t wait for your danish story.

    4. You’re back! I loved your Lace-stories, but I’m very exited to see you’re going to work on a Danish story! Loved the chemistry between these two in this short story.

    5. hehe. danish. yay.although i’m not liking dana’s interest in melanie, i’m looking forward on the development of the relationship between danish now that dana is out but how much would they ignore the intensity between them…

    6. Hey blue! Pendulums was indeed the perfect title for this very satisfying one-off! Like everyone else, I’m sure you could delight us further with is she/isn’t she situations….but this definitely set the stage perfectly for that great tension that is so obvious now in retrospect! I thought this was finely and realistically crafted (for just a teensy moment I thought you were going to have Dana make a miraculous comeback in her tennis match…which would have been fun…but utterly unrealistic!) And, REALLY loved the door in Alice’s face! Finally, I could just ‘see’ Alice making the comment about Melanie…you truly captured these two in a very engaging story….great to see you posting again!

    7. Yay Blue, wonderful to see you posting again! I’m so glad I caught this fic, and like your chracter development in your stellar Lace writings, the way you portray interaction between Dana and Alice here is delightful–I especially loved the way Dana confides shyly in Alice and feels something shifting between them. And Alice and the door? Classic. So Bravo to you! And if you decide to continue with this, you know, hey, I’d be OK with that;) –your loyal fan
