“I don’t want to hear it Shane” and with that Carmen slammed the door in Shane’s face.

Not so far away, Tina answered her front door with a similar expression of shock and anger. Tears started to roll down her cheeks as she grabbed Angelica from Bette’s arms and held her tightly.

    “T, I’m so sorry”

“You’re crazy. You know that Bette? Fucking crazy!”

“I didn’t know what to do. I…” Bette fought back tears “I couldn’t let you take my baby away”

“So instead you took her away from me?” Tina’s eyes were cold and accusing.

    “You gave me no choice”

“There’s always a fucking choice Bette. All your life you’ve had choices, and you know what, most ofn the time you made the fucking wrong ones”

    “This isn’t about the past”

“No, its about my daughter, who you can damn well be sure you’ll never be going near again”

    “T, please…” Bette begged.

    “Forget it Bette”

And with that Bette too found the door being slammed in her face, and she too was left outside in the cold.

Shane scuffed her feet as she slowly wandered down the street. She had nowhere to go, and so felt in no need to hurry. The familiar surroundings meant nothing to her anymore, everything was just a blur. Every since she’d abandoned Carmen at their wedding ceremony, it’d seemed as though she was incapable of feeling anything. Don’t let yourself feel anything, and that way you never get hurt, that had also been her philosophy on life. Well she had let herself feel, and it’d made her happier than she’d ever been. But having her personality, Shane just couldn’t give in to that happiness. And in trying to protect the person she cared about, she’d only ended up hurting her.

“Fuck you!” she yelled to no-one in particular.

“Bad day?” the soft voice came from behind Shane.

Shane spun round to see a disheartened Bette leant against a wall.

“Don’t think it could have been any worse”

    “Join the club”

Shane strolled over to lean next to Bette. They had always seemed an odd couple of friends, yet seemed to weirdly compliment each other. They lived opposite lives, yet never judged one another. They had a mutual respect for one another, and their loyalty as friends was unshakeable.

“You left with nowhere to go as well?” Shane asked finally.

“Nowhere to go in life” Bette said simply.

    “Welcome to my world”

The two women stared out into the evening sky before them. Without speaking Bette reached out an arm to put round Shane, and they rested their heads against each other.

“How about we go get a drink?”

“Sounds perfect” Shane gave a half smile, her first in a long time.
