    Remember Who You Are 6

It was a small step towards shedding the habits and behaviors of the past, habits that kept feelings hidden. A small step towards vocalizing her feelings, however harsh they may be. Historically, this event would cause a fracture in the foundation of their relationship and Tina needed to remember that she played a role in anything that happened. They needed to talk about it, not ignore it and pretend everything was fine. She would need to be prepared to talk when she got home…

Her phone buzzed. “You did. I know. I am so sorry. Please forgive me. You are important, the most important thing to me.”

And Bette meant it. She sat frozen in her seat, berating herself for slipping into old patterns. She hadn’t even said hello to Tina when she called, just launched into talking about herself. About the Gallery opening. About her plans. She was so excited about the dinner for the opening, she couldn’t help herself. She had to talk about it, and she had interrupted Tina as a result. Once again putting her own needs above those of her spouse.

Bette sighed, finally she could do things her way for the opening, use her sense of style and perfection. It was a dream come true. She had waited so long professionally to be able to be in this position and Tina was a big reason why she could now make it happen. The financial pressure was shared, and Bette was comfortable in Tina carrying the bigger load until the Gallery could take off. And this opening could, would change all of that.

Her phone buzzed. “It’s ok Bette. I just want to be there with you. At the opening. Our opening. We will figure it out”. Bette sighed. She was tempted to call the artist and see about a reschedule but so much work had gone into setting the date as it was. And she knew Charlotte LaVoie had a debut in New York the following Monday. She nervously rubbed her neck and then texted Tina back, “thank you for understanding” …she knew she had hurt Tina today. Her heart felt heavy, and her vision blurred as she fought back tears.
