    Reunions: Chapter 1

    “Welcome to Los Angeles.”

Lara’s heart pounded when she read the message on the plaque in the baggage area at LAX.   Grabbing her suitcase off the luggage track, she manoeuvred through the hordes of people crowded around the baggage claim machines, and tried to avoid slamming into tourists who were no doubt too exhausted from their flights to notice whether they were walking at a snail’s pace or not.

She was really here.  In L.A.  She was Home, with a capital H.  Whatever “home” meant now –  after seven long months of living in New York, working in her new job as the head chef for a trendy restaurant, Lara wasn’t entirely sure anymore.  Besides, this was only “home” for a week, then it was back to New York once again.

As she neared the exit of the passengers-only section of the airport, her heart continued to beat furiously in her chest.  Who would be waiting for her on the other side of those double doors? she wondered.  Shane and Jenny – that much she knew for certain.  Shane was the one who had invited her to Bette and Tina’s recommitment ceremony, and had offered her a place to stay for the next week.

But, Lara couldn’t help but wonder whether anyone else would show up.  Well, not just “anyone else” – there was a very specific person she had in mind: Alice.  Lara tried to tamp down the hopefulness she felt growing inside of her as she considered whether Alice might have come to welcome her back to L.A.

Of course Alice won’t be here, she thought scornfully.  Not after the way things had ended between them.  Certainly not after seven months of absolutely zero communication.

Pushing through the doors, she immediately heard Jenny’s voice call out, “there she is!”  Looking to her right, she saw Jenny and Shane waving enthusiastically and walking toward her.  Though she was pleased to see her friends again, she couldn’t help but glance behind them to check whether anyone else was following.  There was no one.  Trying to disguise her palpable disappointment behind a large smile, Lara met Shane and Jenny and gave them each a tight hug.
