    Reunions: Chapter 1

“Hi, I’m Lara,” she said, offering her hand to Tasha.

“I know,” Tasha said, with a slight edge in her voice that she tried to hide behind a bright smile.  “I’m Tasha.  I’ve heard a lot about you, Lara.”

Lara tried to maintain her pleasant exterior, but she couldn’t help but wonder exactly what Tasha had heard about her.  Glancing over at Alice, she noticed that the blonde’s face had turned to an even darker shade of red.

“Well, you sure do know how to make an exit, Lara!” Shane said, in an effort to lighten the moment.

“You’re leaving?” Alice asked, with a hint of disappointment in her voice.  Lara looked at her curiously, but she couldn’t read Alice’s expression.

“Uh, yeah.  I think I’m going to head back to Shane and Jenny’s to grab a quick nap to get over a bit of my jetlag,” Lara explained.  “Plus, I guess I should shower some of this mud off myself,” she added with a laugh, wiping the worst of the dirt off her jeans.

“I’ll drive you to the house,” Jenny said, getting up quickly.

“We’ll catch up tomorrow night, ok Lara?” Bette said.  “I hear Shane and Jenny are throwing a welcome home bash in your honour.”

“Really?” Lara smiled gratefully at Shane and Jenny.  “Ok, I guess I’ll see you all there,” Lara said, trying not to look too obviously at Alice.

As she turned to leave, Tasha stepped into her path.  “It was great to finally meet you, Lara,” she said with a significant look that no one else at the table caught.

“You too,” Lara replied.  She was pleased to hear that her voice sounded relatively calm.  Maybe I can deal with this, she thought to herself.  Maybe I can pretend that I’m fine with Alice moving on without me.

But, as she turned to leave, she felt someone touch her back lightly.  Turning around, she saw Alice standing close to her with a pansy in her hand.

“This was stuck to your shirt,” Alice explained, handing the flower to Lara.  As she took it, their fingers brushed gently against each other.  Swallowing hard, Lara glanced at Alice and tried to smile casually.

“Thanks,” she managed to choke out before walking away.  Holding onto the flower like it was a precious artifact, Lara quickly realised that she was going to have a more difficult time pretending to be over Alice than she had hoped.
