Role reversals – Bette and James

“Of course. I’ll get Alex bathed and fed then put him down for the night. I’ll be out shortly.”

    ***

Bette and the Bolen family enjoyed a great evening together. They grilled, ate their meal in the outdoor dining area on the back deck and sipped the excellent California vintage while enjoying a stunning view of the beautiful desert sunset.

James called the hospital at around 9:00pm to check on his father. He was told by the private duty nurse that John was sleeping soundly. Even though the family was not restricted by visiting hours, and had pretty much taken up residence at that hospital they agreed to allow the patient one night of undisturbed sleep. It took some convincing but finally Mrs. Bolen gave in to her own exhaustion and welcomed the chance to sleep in her own bed.

After an early morning hospital visit and teary eyed good-byes, Stephanie, Bette, Alex, and Bryan headed to the airport for their flight east. The Peabody jet was fueled and ready to go by 10:00am. It was a four and a half hour flight to Boston where the couple was dropped off; then an additional hour’s flight to New York City. Bette and Alex were met at the private airstrip by Peggy’s chauffer David and driven to the Tribeca loft.

Considering this was only Alex’s second time on an airplane, he was a trooper and traveled well but he was cranky by the time they arrived at Bette’s second home. Bette ran a lavender fragrant scented bubble bath for both of them, and put on relaxing music while they soaked. After the calming bath she ate a light snack and fed Alex a bottle before putting him down for the night. Bette had prepared a basinet for Alex in her room, but she doubted it would get much use. Since Tina wasn’t with her she preferred to have her son sleep in the queen sized bed cuddled up to her warm body.

Bette set the alarm on her cell phone to vibrate and put it on her pillow in case she dosed off. She was waiting for late evening in Vancouver to receive a call from her estranged girlfriend. Tina had warned that cell phone signals would be intermittent on location so it was best if she made and received calls on the land-line in her room at the lodge where the crew was staying.

When they said their good-byes a few days earlier Tina had promised she would try to talk to Bette every day that they were apart. She was saddened to hear the news of John Bolen’s illness and understood the urgency of Bette’s decision to take over James’ commitments for the Peabody projects in New York.

Tina was in fact relieved that Bette would be otherwise occupied in New York so she wouldn’t come to Canada. She didn’t want her in Vancouver but it wasn’t for the reasons Bette might think. The fact is that it was getting harder to maintain her composure around Bette and she was fearful of what Bette would do if she found out that Kate Arden was sexually harassing her. The situation between them was growing more antagonistic. The woman was relentless. She had her heart set on Tina. She was already making Tina’s life a living hell at the studio and now she would be isolated with the woman and the film crew in some remote part of Canada for the better part of eight weeks.

As the blonde crawled into bed at the Canadian Lodge after an exhausting day she picked up the phone and asked for a long-distance connection to close the 2,500 mile distance between her and Bette. It was 9:00pm in Canada and 1:00am in New York. She hated the four hour time difference and that she couldn’t call at a more reasonable time of day but she knew Bette would be awaiting her call.

Bette felt more than heard her cell phone vibrating near her ear. She picked it up and whispered hello, careful not to awaken the baby.

“Hi babe, it’s me. Did I wake you?” Tina whispered back.

“No. I was waiting for you to call. I set the alarm just in case I dozed off. How are you Tee?”

    “Missing you.”

    “Really?”

“Really.” Tina answered with tears streaming down her cheeks.

    1. It’s time Bette and Tina have a heart to heart conversation. The last three of this chapter are so comforting. Will Bette hear the sadness Tina is feeling? Will Tina hear the longing in Bette’s voice? What will it take for these two to trust each other?

      I can see Bette on a plane…

Still loving loving this story… if you are feeling generous tomorrow I won’t complain.

    2. Tina thought she could handle Kate on her own but it doesn’t look like it. Bette will put her in her place. They have money, power and connections. Kate will never work in Hollywood again. Tina has to trust Bette to know what to do and how to do it.

    3. Wow! This could sound harsh and I apologize in advance – but Tina has to get her act together and soon. It’s either that or she will loose Bette for good. It seems that Bette is making every effort to support Tina and complies with her wishes/demands, but there is little she gets in return. What is Tina playing at still tolerating Kate’s inappropriate behavior without taking proper actions to stop her. Seems that she perhaps isn’t so opposed to Kate’s advances. Because really she could just speak to Peggy and explain the situation and I am sure that nobody would blame her if they lost Kate as the director and if her behavior would be made public it surely would harm Kate’s reputation and make it difficult for her to ever direct serious movies again. I’m not sure that I would like for Bette to just show up unannounced in Canada just to again be rebuffed by Tina. Perhaps it’s time that Tina does the chasing and shows that she is committed to make her relationship with Bette and Alex work. Looking forward to your next post and as always thank you for sharing your exceptional talent with us.

      • First, let me give you a great big Texas thank you for all the posts today. Also I agree 10k percent with the posters before me on their opinions about what needs to be done about Bette and Tinas’ situation. I, too, think Tina should trust Bette and tell her what is going on and they together can talk to Peggy and get this stuff straightened out and get kate the hell away from them. Thanks again for the posts. Have a great weekend.

    4. I don’t want anyone’s part at this story because it has its flaws and what Bette and Tina committed against their relationship.
we know that this is a pre-written story, and we just have to wait for what the future holds, but sometimes it’s hard to wait when such obvious things “annoy” the reader :-D
I don’t want to repeat what others have already been described because they are perfectly summed up what should be done if they both want the relationship to work yet!
I look forward to the next chapter!

    5. We’ll dang missy git’er did!…this is too intense!..we got ourselves one of those page turner don’t put it down til we find out what happens to our beloved Tibette story!…boom!…You shor do know how to write’m…what a storyteller you is…heck yeah…Well now I’ma gon sit back n let you drive and enjoy da ride!…come right back soon nuff…ya hear!..kaboom!…**wink** xoxo

    6. I am having a difficult time accepting that Tina is dealing with the advances of Kate by not dealing with them. This is not the accretive and aggressive Tina that I have come to know in the story,. After recently finding closure of the abuse that Bette suffered, it seems that Tina would not tolerate the behavior of Kate for any reason because she knows the impact it has on someone. I am struggling with why is Tina so lost… what else is going on in her world that would prevent her from fighting back?
