That any of this was normal to her sickened me. That I silently pleaded for my child to run rushed all of the motivation through my body, and lighted me into action. I would leave, and I would take her with me – it was decided within that moment, and as he finally left me there. I knew the bruises would be bad, but my adrenaline was racing just thinking about getting out of the dangerous relationship. I would wait until he had gone to work and I would leave. Just like that. It all seemed so simple; it was the easiest part of escaping him – to leave.

As I heard him stir in bed the next morning, I was instantly wakened, but closed my eyes once more. I didn’t even want to talk to him, or I thought he might know something was wrong. I just laid in bed, breathing as calmly as I could manage while everything in me was doubting this plan I had formed in my mind. It was a brave plan, knowing the physical ability of my husband, and his relatively obsessive nature. Even then, I knew he would look for me, but I somehow managed to pretend my way through sleep until the moment I heard the front door open and then close again. I knew that often he came to check on me, to see if I’d waken up to say his apologies to me this time, but I didn’t want to hear them.

Slowly, I eased my way out of bed, knowing that I had done nothing strange yet. I was simply waking. I remember reminding myself of that so that I had the strength to get out of bed.

Before I knew it, an hour had passed, and then I knew he was gone for sure. It even gave me time to set out a quick breakfast for me and my daughter, and also to pack a lunch and plenty of snacks. I knew it would be a long train ride.

"You ready, Angie?" I asked with a little smile, taking some small joy in the nickname as my nerves rattled me. Somehow, I still managed to stick to my schedule, all mapped out in my head – I couldn’t risk writing any of it, for fear he would find it. My privacy was slipping away from me, so I risked nothing.

    1. Really great start, I love the way you write and you already have me hooked with this story. I can’t wait to see the connection grow between them as something positive comes out of something so terrible

    2. The first thing that ran through my mind after reading the first paragraph was J.Lo’s movie (only good one) “Enough”. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

    3. Hey GR, What a great opener to what is lining up to be a fantastic and important story. While I accept that this might be too difficult for many people to read however it survives and grows in silence. I applaud you for promoting the the idealogy of survival and optimism. Life can and does get better when you take charge of your destiny. The hardness part is the constant emotional and physical blackmail that the abuser use to maintain the status quo. I have the feeling that Tina’s life is about to improve immensely. I can’t wait to read more. GR, you take on the hard subjects then educate and entertain. You rock my world. Many thanks and keep up the great work. Your Loyal Fan and (Proud) Friend.
