Chapter twelve

Bette and the others arrived at their hotel in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland and wanted to get inside as fast as possible. Once inside, the warm air filled their lungs and they could finally rest and relax. After checking in, they decided to drink something together before going to their rooms. Bette would be sharing her room with Jessica. They ordered some coffees and hot chocolates and started small conversation. Bette was rather retreating; she sat down in a chair a little further away from the other activists. Jessica noticed this and sat down beside her. She placed her coffee on the table and rubbed Bette’s back.
Jessica: “Hey, everything alright?”
Bette: “Yeah, I just miss Tina.”
Jessica: “You really love her, don’t you?”
Bette: “I’ve never loved anyone like her. She’s just amazing. She loves me unconditionally, just as I love her unconditionally. She understands me and can read me like no one else.”
Jessica: “You deserved a little luck Bette. You have such a good heart, but people always took that for granted or played with your heart. When I saw you and Tina together, I could see in her look, her touch, that she would never do anything to hurt her. The love between you is just so present. It’s amazing really. I’ve never seen anything like it in my whole life.”
Bette: “And what about you, anyone you love?”
Jessica: “No, not right now. I dated a few people, but I haven’t found someone I can love yet.”
Bette: “Don’t worry. Someday you will, when you least expect it. Trust me, that’s what happened to me. I wanted to thank you for coming to LA. You really didn’t have to but it was very nice.”
Jessica: “I wanted everyone to be on the same plane. No separation. We go together, we leave together. It’s as simple as that. Have you spoken to Roxanne yet?”
Bette: “Yeah, she sat down next to me on the plane for a minute. She apologized and wants us to be friends.”
Jessica: “Well, I can tell you this. After you left, Roxanne really changed. I don’t know what or who made her realize that what she did was wrong, but it certainly changed her. She volunteered many times and supported us financially too, like you do. She’s a whole new person. At first she was a ***** to many people, but now she’s everyone’s friend.”
Just as Jessica said this, Roxanne walked over to them.
Roxanne: “Jess, could I talk to Bette in private for a while?”
Jessica: “Sure, I’ll go. See you guys later, okay?”
Bette: “Bye Jess.”
As Jessica walked away, Roxanne sat down next to Bette.
Roxanne: “Bette, I’m really sorry for what I did. I would really appreciate it if you gave me a chance to show you how much I have changed. We’re on a mission together and we have to trust each other in order to succeed. I know that I broke your trust but I’ll do whatever it takes to make it up to you, if you let me that is. Will you give me another chance?”
Bette sighed deeply and looked up at Roxanne. She could tell Roxanne really meant what she said and decided to put the past behind her.
Bette: “I am prepared to give you another chance Roxanne but I haven’t forgiven you yet, remember that.”
Roxanne: “Thank you Bette. You can’t imagine how much this means to me.”
