Savannah
Story written on September 2, 2011 by kins40.
Bette knew exactly how it had played out. The head Matriarch of the family, the calf had belonged to, had had to make the difficult choice to let her head rule over her heart. She had had to consider, first and foremost, the well being of her group over and above the needs of an individual, even if this individual was a baby. And knowing elephants the way she did, Bette knew that the decision had not only been heartbreaking for the Matriarch but for the entirety of the herd as well.
It was now up to her to rescue the calf.
Tina stood back and looked on as Bette entered in discussion with the tribesmen and a tall man clad in camouflage uniform. No doubt, an official from the Kenya Wildlife Service who had sent the signal that a baby elephant was in need of rescuing.
She saw Bette gratefully thanking the tribesmen.
"I think this little critter down below is very lucky indeed." Bette said as she came back towards Tina. Concern was etched on her face.
"Oh…?" There was obviously more than met the eye in Bette’s remark.
"Yeah …. When they found the calf, the entire tribe bar those two men were determined to kill the calf and eat it. They are quite partial to wild game meat in this region. An elephant calf is quite a delicacy but those two were having none of it. The fact that this baby is till a love is really down to them."
Tina was so shocked by this revelation, she could do nothing else but open her eyes wide in horror.
Bette lost no time in taking charge of the rescue effort. All the while Tina observed how focused and incredibly dedicated the brunette was. Precise in all her commands and assured of her decisions she directed her team effortlessly and effectively.
They manoeuvred a rope under the calf’s front legs and as best they could they were able to hoist the tiny exhausted baby up the side of the cliff.
It landed back at the top, somewhat shaken by the ordeal and the unceremonious but only way, it had been manhandled back to the surface.

Silent reader here. This story just brought tears to my eyes. I feel the plight of the tiny elephant right in the center of my soul. Please let “Butterfly” live and let the love of Tina and Bette blossom as so to rid the earth robbers such as Jodie. I was fortunate to visit Kenya about 12 years ago and experience nature as only it can exist in Africa. Please contimue to write this wonderful story. PPS
Silent reader here and not much to say except I love this story and look forward to all of the upcoming chapters! PPS Thanks
Amazing and sensibly written chapter. I wasn’t reading it, I was in the savannah discovering, feeling its beauty with Tina. Thanks for detailing the extraordinary work of all the people involved in safeguarding the wilde life. your account hit home as a fews days ago I saw a tv report on rhinos massive killing for their “aphrodisiac” ivory! We need more awareness in every way possible, again thanks for this beautiful post and now you have to find a way and post asap…………… BTW, I subscribed a lifelong membership in that infamous club ((^_^))
Quite a display of your talents here. Your description of the Savannah was beautiful.
Okay, I loved this chapter. Very sad, but that’s part of the intent of the story and so beautifully written that you can only be drawn to it and go with the flow… And again, necessary for the building of the chemistry. And a little bit of awareness promotion never hurts, does it? Now, I must share that I laughed at myself at the beginning of the story because, and that shows your talent in writing realistically, I actually suffered from vertigo when Tina was on that helicopter!!! I swear I am not exagerating, LOL! That’s how much in the story you took me! Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the trip, but it was so funny that there wa
Oups, wrong key… There was a point where I couldn’t wait for them to land!! I know it’s silly… Yet, it is the truth. Anyway, I’ll say it again, I love this story, you are amazing, and I am so glad you actually chill out by writing for us… Please, keep chilling! Right, time for bed… Merciiiiiiiiii! Kw
Awesome update
Kins, once again wonderful story telling! You have such a gift for bringing all “to life” …. but no fair! You failed to give the “two-hanky” warning (sniff). Having been on enough animal rescues with my better half I feel for Tina and also hope “Butterfly” lives. Can’t wait to see where you take us next :) Have a great weekend! PS – re: the water mellon thing, I get that comment alot ;)
well shit what can i say tibette and wild at heart, my two loves, our animal kingdom and the human soul link………x
This is so touching. You seem to be very familiar with Africa. Descriptions are beautiful. Sure hope the little girl makes it.
i have a newfound respect for elephants thanks to your story, I mean I’ve always had an appreciation for animals, I love all of God’s creations, but reading this heartbreaking scene, I would probably react the same way Tina did
Wow, your writing is such a pleasure to read. Like the baby elephant, I felt cocooned in your words. I came to the end and realized that tears had pooled in my eyes. Loved Bette and Tina hearing each others reactions thru the headsets. Beautifully written! Thanks for the frequent updates. Can’t wait for your next chapter.
Please..call Bette to come get me..I’m lost in your story! Please..call Bette in her helicopter..I am lost in the story!:O Amazing update I truly just love this story!!
No I don’t need a warning regrding jodie, I just want her gone, permanently. Oh my goodness, you take me through so many emotions with your brilliant writing. You took us to the savannah and on that darn helicopter ride too, being afraid of heights, I could feel it, I would have lost my toenails. Love how sensitive Tina is, the mother in her coming out with her soft and loving heart. When she has to go back to NY, she is gonna hate to leave little “Butterfly” and her human Mama B. Love this story for a lot of reasons. You describe their world so perfectly. Have you been there? Thanks for posting such a warm and loving chapter.
Oh Kins! Thanks!! So beautiful chapter! Kinda bitter sweet though.. Your story makes me adore the elephant more, especially their babies… Your writing brings back the memory of those mix feeling when looking at those giant baby with their innocent look… And LoL… If there’s any show on the elephant whisperer, I will watch them for sure!! ;-) erm would you please keep the baby elephant alive? Besides for a kind of make up after made your reader shed tears… It can be an extra bonding for T to stay there and not going back??? ;-) he3… Anyway it’s Saturday in my place now.. I still looking forward to their Saturday too ;-) thanks for the update Kins! and have a great weekend! :-)
The only emotion missing from that chapter was the “music” from OUT OF AFRICA.(one of my top ten movies)…and loved the line: “girly ribbon”. Keep ’em coming…this is quite enjoyable!
Loving it! I can “hear” and picture everything.
As always I am in awe of your writing kins! Such a heartwarming and beautiful story! Please continue! Thanks :)
Another wonderfully written update. I love this written and the way it’s written I can actually picture it all. Thank you for this story.
Your description of the baby elephant is so sweet. I really hope she lives. Tina seems share Bette’s sensitivity with animals. That should go a long way toward making Bette feel more safe with her.
This story has really surprised me and I am thoroughly enjoying the journey.
K40..omg..you’ve made me cry..I’m crying while reading..damn..the tough choices, the “Braveness” the Calf showed, And the sad fact that we can’t save THEM ALL.. ..AWESOME UPDATE!..
Your stories amaze me. Today you described an animal, how it looked and all. Even that was very beautiful. Your stories can fill a heart with tenderness and love. Today that tenderness was for the little baby elephant. Please post more frequently.

Very moving chapter, K40. And we have discovered that Tina is a big softie. So endearing. And having flown in a helicopter before, I can only imagine how sexy that sigh from Bette was coming in surround sound thru the headphones! By the way, I posted, so it’s your turn to post another chapter. How about quid pro quo? You post, and I shall follow? What do you say?
Wonderful.Thank you.
Very touching chapter. My heart breaks for the baby elephant and I hope she lives. PPS!!
Simply amazing – you took every one of us along for the ride across the savanne and made it real. I swear I saw each and every animal pointed out and felt the excitement. Wonder if “Butterfly” will refuse feeding from anyone but Tina.
I felt dizzy from the ride, but it was breathtaking one, and the sight of the baby elephant is overwhelming, I could cry with Tina! I loved this chapter it is amazing one I can’t wait for ur updates, and nice to “see” u 2 ;D
This is so good
