    Savannah

Augustine had been her nanny from the day and hour Bette set foot in Kenya, some thirty years ago now.
After the death of her mother, Bette’s father moved his family, consisting solely of a five year old Bette and himself over to this part of Kenya in search of a new focus.
A wealthy man in his own right and a keen naturalist, Melvin Porter set up a foundation in support of Wildlife conservation in this beautiful part of the world.
It took some years to establish his lifetime ambition and over the years his efforts were rewarded and the foundation was granted Charitable status.
The venture was now as successful as ever and since her father’s death Bette was left in charge of perpetuating Melvin’s legacy.
Bette grew up in Kenya, immersed in the wonderful and yet dangerous life of the African savannah only spending a few years away from her beloved adopted country to return to L.A to study and become a vet.
The brunette emerged from her shower, refreshed and all thoughts of lack of sleep were soon forgotten.
She got dressed quickly in a pair of army green combat trousers and matching polo shirt. The top left hand side of the cotton top bore the logo of the "Melvin Porter Foundation." The white stitching formed a circle surrounding the head of an elephant with trunk and tusks thrust in the air.
She quickly fastened her heavy walking boots, grabbed  and walked out of her room in search of her morning cup of coffee.
As she walked through her spacious home, Bette took a quick glance at her watch. 4am.
The surroundings  of the homestead were still quiet at this time of the morning but she knew all too well that it would not remain like this for very long.
Melvin had built the house at the centre of the foundation compound. A magnificent sprawling house, entirely built out of wood and sliding glass doors with a thatched roof and surrounding viewing decks.
The view from any point in the house extended out over the immensity of Kenya at its wildest.
She finally reached the kitchen, where Augustine was already hard at work despite the early hour.
Bette paused briefly to observe her. She had no idea of her age. She was small and thin, almost frail like the autumn leaves in the October breeze but you would be wrong to think that a strong gust of wind would have had reason of her stability.
She was a determined woman, strong and not afraid of work. She walked with a slight limp, the small hinderance cause by arthritic hips. Her once jet black hair was now dulled down by some grey and her skin was dry and showed visible valleys dug by the passing years.
"Unafanya nini?" the old woman asked without even turning around to look at Bette.
"I am not doing anything!" Bette replied once again amused at the impatience her old nanny seems to show at her momentary idleness.
"Your coffee is on the table, drink it and be on your way, the men have arrived and they have gathered at the front of the house."
Bette eyed the steaming cup which sat in the middle of the kitchen table. Kenyan coffee was an experience on its own, so well balanced it was almost sublime.
Bette took her first mouth full of the black liquid, strong with a distinct bold flavour. She drank it almost like a wine and it left her with the same mellow aftertaste.
She made quick work of the single cup and walked out of the house shouting, "Asante Augustine, see you later on!"
"Nzuri sana Mama Bette,  kukaa salama na !" was the reply from the old lady.
Bette smiled at the wish her nanny always made for her when she set off into the savannah, "I will stay safe, Augustine…. As for happy, we may have a long way to go yet!"

    3. Hey Kins! Yippee another story from you!! :-) What a beginning :-) totally a different Melvin here :-p and Bette stays in Kenya?! Hmmm… Interesting! I hope you don’t make Tina as one of the Illegal tusk hunter or trader >_< ... Anyway, no worries about the language... Let it flow with the story, for me personally it's totally foreign and I just take it as part of the story where Bette interacted with the locals. :-) so, what are you waiting for?! Just bring it on...!!! :-) he3...
