Adams Porter Household…
A few mornings later, Bette lies in bed staring up at the ceiling after another sleepless night. She turns to check the clock on the bedside table and then looks at her sleeping wife. After staring at the ceiling for a few beats, she carefully climbs out of bed and walks out of the bedroom and down the hall to check on her son before heading into the kitchen.
After starting the coffee maker, she leans against the counter as her mind drifts back to the most tumultuous time of her life…
Six years earlier…
It had been a week since Tina left, and Bette was tired of sitting on her hands. She frantically threw clothes into a duffle bag, so consumed with regret, grief, and anxiousness that she didn’t hear her sister walk into the house.
Kit watched Bette walk around the room for a beat before she hesitantly knocked on the open bedroom door. ”Knock, knock…” she softly said.
Bette turned and looked at her sister. ”Fuck… Kit, you scared the shit out of me….”
”Sorry….” Kit said as she walked into the room. She glanced at the bag on the bed and then looked at Bette. ”Where are you going?”
Bette shrugged nonchalantly. ”To bring Tina and our baby back home….”
”But you don’t even know where she is….”
”I know, but I have to do something….”
Kit watched her frantic sister continue to throw things in the duffle bag. ”Baby girl, just think for a second. Let’s just say you do find her. I doubt very seriously she’s just gonna do what you want and come back home with you. You cheated on her, Bette; that’s not something people forgive after a week ….”
Bette glared at Kit. ”I know that …. but what the hell am I supposed to do?”
”You give her some time, baby sis….” Kit gently says.
Bette shakes her head and wipes her tears. ”I can’t…she may not be ready to forgive me, but she has to come back…. this is her home….”
Kit sighed and shook her head at her determined sister. ”Bette—”
Bette stopped packing and turned and looked at Kit. ”Kit, I’m’ going. If you can’t support me in my decision to go find my pregnant wife, then you can leave….”
