    CHAPTER 153

Tina parked her car as close to the hospital entrance as possible. This was the day that she had been dreaming about ever since Bette had been taken ill with meningitis. Two weeks after Bette had been rushed into hospital she was finally being released. Tina had been awake  since 5 and had got up at 6. She had cleaned the whole house, been shopping for food supplies and then she had gone and bought a couple of hundred dollars worth of movies. They were going to have time on their hands and lying  in bed watching movies was a glorious busman’s holiday for Tina and she hoped Bette would enjoy it as well.  Tina was full of hopes and dreams which was a nice change to the terrors of what she had been going through in the past 14 days.

When Tina arrived at Bette’s room her case was open on her bed and it was packed and Bette was missing. Tina walked in and looked around this room. She had spend so many long hours sitting in this room watching Bette sleep and obsessing over the slightest detail of her health. Looking back Tina had obsessed over how long Bette was sleeping and in what position she was sleeping in. She hoped beyond words that those days were in the past. Tina sat on the bed and exhaled -she wasn’t sure how she had survived the last 14 days but she had. She had been strong and decisive and she had made it through the fear that had threatened to drown her when she stopped for long enough to consider what would have happened if James had not realised why Bette was ill. Tina was so lost in her own world that she didn’t notice Bette walking into the room. Bette was wearing black slacks and a navy blue cashmere sweater. She had lost weight – her face slightly gaunt and she was walking slowly but she was up and about which was the main thing.

    “Hello there “ Bette said

Tina snapped herself from her day time nightmare and smiled

“Been getting some phone numbers from the nurses ?”

“Of course  – I should be up for a threesome sometime around Easter”
