    Soul Mates – Chapter 8

    "And?" Kit asked expectantly.

"And . . . then she stood with Helena Peabody"

"Really?" Kit asked with a raised eyebrow and a sarcastic tone.

Bette turned her head to look at her sister with the same confused look on her face as before, "What are you gettin’ at?"

Kit shrugged innocently, "I’m not sayin’ anythin’. I’m only askin’. Do you really think she stayed with Helena?"

"Well I mean, its obvious that she did. She didn’t chase after me when I walked off the battlefield . . . . well, she did come later but that was probably because Helena rejected her because when that phone rang, she left not too long after"

"Really?" Kit asked again in the same manner. She knew the true answer to her question and also knew that Bette was leaving out quite a bit in her retelling of what happened before Tina left.

Bette rolled her eyes and sighed loudly, throwing her hands up in the air and sitting up, "What, Kit? I know you know something. I know you’re gettin’ at somethin’ even if you say you’re not"

Kit had a small smile on her face and it both frustrated and confused Bette to see it, "I just wanna know, honest to God, if you truly think Tina stayed with Helena"

Bette tried to read the expression on her sister’s face but couldn’t figure out where Kit was going with all this. At the same time, her confident demeanor was dwindling. She had been so angry and so convinced that Tina truly wanted to be with Helena but when she considered Kit’s words, Bette suddenly wasn’t as sure anymore.

    "S-she . . she had to"

    "And why is that?"

Bette didn’t have an answer, no real facts to back up what she originally thought to be true. Yes, Tina was engaged to Helena but Kit was right. Ever since the blonde had been down in Alabama, Bette had her complete attention. Even when they argued about the divorce papers or just anything at all, Tina looked at her in a way she would a lover, not an ex-wife. Tina had initiated kisses, returned them and if it weren’t for that fucking phone call, would have even been moaning out Bette’s name on that couch for hours.

Why again did she think Tina wanted Helena?

When Bette didn’t say anything, Kit decided to answer the question she had originally asked her sister.

"She and Helena aren’t together anymore. They haven’t been since that last time you saw her"

Bette had been staring at the fabric of the couch near her thigh when her sister’s words caused her to lift her eyes. They widened so that when the tears formed, they fell effortlessly.

    "What?"

"She stayed behind on the battlefield to try and make sense of what happened between you two to Helena. Their relationship was unofficially over when she went to you right after. Unofficially because in Tina’s mind they were done but in Helena’s they weren’t. Tina made it clear after she left your house and went home to where Helena was waitin’ for her"

Bette was in disbelief, the words were incredibly hard to get out, "H-how . . how do you know all that?"

"She came to see me before she went back to New York. We spent a few hours talkin’ and she told me everythin’"

Bette’s head dropped again, her heart was beating so fast that she could hear it in her ears. She didn’t know what to think of what Kit was telling her, it was a lot to take in. She knew Kit would never lie to her and that made it that much harder to absorb.

Taking Bette’s silence into consideration, Kit leaned forward and gently held one of her sister’s hands in between both of hers, "That girl loves you, baby girl. I can’t make your decisions for you but whatever you do, I’ll support you. I just want you to be happy"

Bette slowly lifted her head to offer a soft smile to her sister. She had a lot to think about but she felt incredibly lucky to have someone like Kit in her life.

    "Thanks Kit"

    1. bette is so thick in the head in this one. wake up and start treating tina right. Helena is so sweet. if Bette doesn’t want to fight for Tina, please set her free and let Helena win her over again.

    2. helena is sweet, decent, and beautiful. so if Bette wants to push Tina away…i won’t blame Tina for feeling something for Helena after being jilted. Bette wake up. Go get Tina or else someone else will!

    3. Yep, Bette would probably appreciate hearing that she was always the first choice. But she’ll have to get her head out of her pittuty to hear it. :-) Thank heaven for the superior mule-handling skills of Alice and Kit. Now when are we gonna learn what Bette’s been up to in her world-conquering activities? Maybe at the big show? (Doncha hate it when readers try to guess what’s coming? OK, I’ll stop doing that.)

    4. I love the phrase that it takes a village to raise a child. I sometimes think that it takes an extended family to get two people together who fate has guided to be in the same space so that they can chose their destiny to be together. Besides anything worth having is worth fighting for. Me thinks that the two lovers are ready to fight for each other!

    5. Someone has to make the first big overture or grand gesture… may as well be Bette since she seems to have been laboring under a lot of assumptions. Tina spilled her guts to everyone but Bette it seems (maybe she would have if Bette would have picked up the phone or seen her, though). Maybe once she gets to Alabama Bette will sweep her off her feet (in more ways than one)? A girl can hope ;) Thanks for the post! :)

    6. I’ve read the chapter a few times more and I think if Tina calls again she should tell Bette that she loves her and only her and wants to make their marriage work and that the divorce has been called off. I think Btte needs to hear that. Can’t wait to see what Bette thinks of the fashion show being in town. This is a great story.
