“Alice, I have to ask you a question. “

        “Shoot Bette.”

“Uh, do you believe that all in love and war is fair?”

“Have you been watching that rom-com movie again? The one where Goldie Hawn’s daughter sings?”

“No… yes, but no, that’s not why I’m asking.”

        “Why are you asking then?”

Bette stared hard at the ring on her finger.

“Oh no… Bette… what did you do?!” Alice watched Bette in horror.

“Nothing! Nothing, I didn’t do anything… yet.” Bette bit her lip and looked at Alice sheepishly.

“Holy ***** Bette! Are you thinking about cheating on Candace?!”

    ******

“You cheated on Candace?!” Tina asked, slightly  aghast.

“No, no! I did not! Alice, if you insist on
telling that irrelevant story, please do it properly.” Bette poked
Alice in the arm and turned to put a reassuring hand on Tina’s
shoulder. “Tina, honey, I did not, nor have I ever, cheated in my
    entire life.”

Bette, Tina, Alice, Dana and Shane were sitting at
the Planet, having Saturday morning brunch. Kit was flitting in between
the counter and their table, bringing cups of coffee and odd bits of
    pastries.

Alice started the whole conversation by saying, “Hey
Bette, remember the time when you wanted to cheat on that *****–*****
    Candace?”

Off Bette’s warning look and Tina’s intrigued smile,
Alice cheerfully recounted that morning four years ago when Bette had
taken Alice aside on their way to the restroom.

“So anyway, Bette was asking coz apparently some
hottie art patron asked her out. And Candace was in Utah on some
carpenters’ convention. While Candace was away, our Bette wanted to
play. Didn’t you? Admit it.” Alice teased.

Bette opened her mouth but couldn’t think of anything to say.

Tina looked at her partner of one year and waited.

Bette thought, ‘If I say that I wanted to cheat,
then that would tell Tina that I have the potential of cheating. If I
say that I didn’t, Tina would again think that Candace is the love of
my life and that I’m just using her to fill the gap that ***** left…
    What to do?!’

The dilemma couldn’t have come at a worse time. Just
the night before, Tina had an attack of insecurity upon discovering one
of Bette’s old emails from Candace while borrowing Bette’s laptop to
write a paper. She’d confronted Bette, and Bette had been too stunned
    to give her much reassurance.

    1. that was close one…whew…i hate candyass already and we’ve never even met her in this story LOL…excellent update as always…the girls almost ruined it for B&T though, i think Bette needs to have serious talk with Alice soon

    2. I dislike someone saying.I”ll think about it,that means NO Are if someone will I’m no sure that is a maybe. Love Bette in this,Alice always has her foot in her mouth.. thanks

    3. When I read ‘Candace’ in the first couple sentences I had to regroup. Then I remembered that she is an integral PAST part of your B&T story. …all is well…Thanks, and keep up the stand-alones. They help me bridge the gap from your delightful first story to your next wonderful one. (no pressure, I’m sure!)

    4. Al sure has a way of messin’ with Bette. She always puts her foot in her mouth, but Bette’s always the one having to explain or regroup afterwards. Tina’s upset with Bette’s past relationship with Candance — thought she agreed to leave the past in the past? Tina’s not playing fair…but then again “all’s fair in love and war.” Please continue.

    5. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when Bette explained what the tickets were for. I’m glad they’re not rushing into it though as they both probably still have a ways to go before doing the forever thing. Can’t wait for the next installment!

    6. I’m not really crazy about this story, but your writing is excellent and so is the idea behind these stand alone. What I don’t like is Bettes past with “The fucking carpenter” LOL and Tina is not very nice in this…poor Bette. But please continue and post soon – thanks.

    7. Ha! never trust women. when they say ‘yes’, ‘it’s ok’ or something like that, it always means not ok. But it’s so cute, heehee.I love the short story, so sweet, thanks.
