Sugar and Spice ~ Chapter 6

    Thursday, February 12, 8:00 p.m.

    Kennard residence

    “Mommy?”

Dotty was unloading the dishwasher but stopped and stood.  She smiled at her daughter, whose blonde hair was so like her own.  She knew that the child had something on her mind and was taking time to form her thoughts.

    “Yes, pumpkin.”

“Do you like the roses daddy gives you?”

Dorothy wondered what had prodded the question.  “Roses?”

“Uh huh.  He says he gives you roses on Valentine’s Day.”

“I love the roses, but you know what I love even more?”

The possibility that there was something better than roses surprised Tina. She shook her head side to side, “No.”

“I love the cards he gives even more.  One year your daddy forgot to buy a card and he made one himself.  That’s the one I love the best.”

“Thank you Mommy,” Tina announced and left her puzzled mother smiling at she ran off to her room.

    Porter residence

Bette had waited a respectable amount of time after her father had dismissed the importance of St. Valentine’s Day before she excused herself to go to her room.

Inside her room, Bette looked at the white teddy bear with a red bow that she thought her mother and father had given her the year before for St. Valentine’s Day.  After her father’s dismissal of the day’s importance, though, she wondered if her recollection was wrong.

Bette slipped from her room and knocked on her older sister Kit’s bedroom door.

Bette didn’t do that very often, so Kit was surprised.  The two sisters loved each other, but the ten year age difference meant that they had little in common.  However, since her mother had left, Bette had come to rely on Kit for an alternate perspective than that of her father.  For her part, Kit was sad for the younger girl, abandoned by her mother and left to be raised by only their demanding father.  Kit appreciated that her own mother only allowed her live with their father because she had been expelled from the high school near her mother’s house.  When Maxine had walked out, Kit had watched her younger sister bravely pretend that nothing was wrong.  She had decided that she would not pierce that false veneer.  She thought that it wasn’t her place to judge how the abandoned child coped.  She had vowed, though, that she would help whenever Bette reached out.

    1. How ironic I was listening to 60s girl singers (Leslie Gore, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, etc.) while reading this. I finished with Marianne Faithful singing “As Tears Go By”. I finished the chapter just before her “Why’d Ya Do It” came on (OK, so that’s not 60s). Ah, young, semi-unsullied love. I’ll restrain the snark. Do your worst. Or best. I’m ready.

    2. Nothing like a bit of intelligent, light-hearted fluff, Spumoni… We can’t all be reading Montaigne all day, can we? I agree with Christy: Do embrace your inner pink-ribboned pony and just keep writing… :-)

    3. Ah the question of the day…”Would you rather have a spoonful of honey or a spoonful of vinegar?” Yeap…sweetness reigns…and so does your story!! Can’t wait to hear about V-card giving. Wonder if Bette’s will include art pics of love? LOL!

    4. Dear lord, little Bette sleeps in a mini-museum! I giggled when I googled and saw the paintings that Melvin did not approve for her daughter. Such a stiff, conservative guy. Isn’t it sweet that little TiBette both got tips to do their own V-Day card? Awww… I can’t wait for V-Day! Thanks a bunch for making me “awww”, giggle and smile, Spumoni! And btw, you offer the wackiest bribes for commenters. LOL. Cheers to your quirky mind, sweet tooth and funny bone! =)

    5. Yep, a card is important, flowers die (although they are pretty and smell good) candy makes you fat (who can only eat one piece) and going out to dinner is cool but what should one order. I love how both Bette and Tina are listening to what their female relatives are saying about how important a card can be.

    6. So, Card giving it is then for our two gilrs, which is actually very sweet and innocent, because as kids we made valentine’s cards for our schoolmates.

    7. There! Hope they will not abduct you to the mother ship now! Although taking that test would be interesting… I like Bette’s taste in art. And so young! Your story makes me happy!

    8. Hey Spumoni, I am loving the fluff and wallowing in its softness.I love how you are showing the completely contrasting parenting skills and upbringings Bette and Tina had.It must be true that opposites attract given the success of their relationship. Perhaps they are filling in the blanks they each have.Just sitting back and enjoying the words. Many thanks frmo Your Loyal Fan.

    9. i just adore all the fluff…thank god for Kit or Bette would have a very hard time with Melvin and his issues…can’t wait to read more fluff
