Sugar and Spice ~ Chapter 6
Â
“Baby girl. What’s up?”
Â
“Nothing.”
Â
Kit ignored the untruth. “C’mon in. I could do with some help picking what belt to wear.”
Â
“OK. I mean, if you need my help.”
Â
“You’ve got a good eye. You’ll know.”
Â
Bette entered Kit’s room. The younger sister loved to visit her older sister’s room. The walls were covered by posters, large pillows were scattered on the floor and everything was in disarray. In contrast, her own room was very tidy.  Her father had allowed her to hang framed reprints of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, a segment of Michelangelo’s ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Goya’s portrait of a little boy wearing red,  Vermeer’s The Milkmaid and Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.   He had rejected Bette’s requests for Raphael’s The Three Graces, Manet’s Le Dejeuner sur l’Herbe, and anything by Picasso or Mark Rothko or even Hieronymous Bosch.Â
Â
Bette liked to visit Kit’s room, but knew that she could never live amidst such chaos.
Â
“So,” Kit faced Bette and held a thin gold belt around her waist. “This one?” Kit replaced that with a wide brown leather belt. “Or this one.”
Â
Bette thought for a moment. “May I see them again?”
Â
Kit repeated her actions.
Â
“Um.”
Â
“What, you don’t like them?”
Â
“I like them. I do.” Bette tilted her head, “I was thinking that you could leave the shirt out and use the brown belt.”
Â
Kit looked at Bette for a moment. She then pulled the T-shirt out of her pants and looped the leather belt around her waist and cinched it.
Â
“Maybe looser and lower. I mean, if you want.”
Â
Kit followed her sister’s suggestion. She then looked at herself in the long mirror, turning from side to side. She slightly adjusted the shirt and belt and turned to get the best view she could of herself from the back. When she turned to face Bette, she smiled.
Â
“Baby sis, remind me to never leave the house without getting a once-over from you.”
Â
Bette smiled happily at the compliment.
Â
Kit looked at her sister appraisingly. “We’ve got to go shopping. Get you some new things to wear.”

Now, now Spumoni. The fluff is beautiful on you! Embrace it!! This is a great read!
I just caught up. This is a very entertaining story, fluff or not. I like it! Thanks for posting!
This is just excellent fluff! Love your author’s notes as well. Thank you I need some fluff and laughter in my life today!
How ironic I was listening to 60s girl singers (Leslie Gore, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, etc.) while reading this. I finished with Marianne Faithful singing “As Tears Go By”. I finished the chapter just before her “Why’d Ya Do It” came on (OK, so that’s not 60s). Ah, young, semi-unsullied love. I’ll restrain the snark. Do your worst. Or best. I’m ready.
Nothing like a bit of intelligent, light-hearted fluff, Spumoni… We can’t all be reading Montaigne all day, can we? I agree with Christy: Do embrace your inner pink-ribboned pony and just keep writing… :-)
Ah the question of the day…”Would you rather have a spoonful of honey or a spoonful of vinegar?” Yeap…sweetness reigns…and so does your story!! Can’t wait to hear about V-card giving. Wonder if Bette’s will include art pics of love? LOL!
Dear lord, little Bette sleeps in a mini-museum! I giggled when I googled and saw the paintings that Melvin did not approve for her daughter. Such a stiff, conservative guy. Isn’t it sweet that little TiBette both got tips to do their own V-Day card? Awww… I can’t wait for V-Day! Thanks a bunch for making me “awww”, giggle and smile, Spumoni! And btw, you offer the wackiest bribes for commenters. LOL. Cheers to your quirky mind, sweet tooth and funny bone! =)
Yep, a card is important, flowers die (although they are pretty and smell good) candy makes you fat (who can only eat one piece) and going out to dinner is cool but what should one order. I love how both Bette and Tina are listening to what their female relatives are saying about how important a card can be.
So, Card giving it is then for our two gilrs, which is actually very sweet and innocent, because as kids we made valentine’s cards for our schoolmates.
There! Hope they will not abduct you to the mother ship now! Although taking that test would be interesting… I like Bette’s taste in art. And so young! Your story makes me happy!
Hey Spumoni, I am loving the fluff and wallowing in its softness.I love how you are showing the completely contrasting parenting skills and upbringings Bette and Tina had.It must be true that opposites attract given the success of their relationship. Perhaps they are filling in the blanks they each have.Just sitting back and enjoying the words. Many thanks frmo Your Loyal Fan.
i just adore all the fluff…thank god for Kit or Bette would have a very hard time with Melvin and his issues…can’t wait to read more fluff
Love the fluff.Thank you.
You are unbelievable. I laughed when I read which pictures Bette hadn’t be able to hang up. I hope to see more soon.
I enjoy the fluff as much as everyone else. This is too cute. PPS!
Can’t blame Melvin for banning Bosch’s art http://5z8.info/stalin_nbt when she’s only eight. Maybe next year?… ;-)
Ummmm your fluff are great lol, will read it any time. You are a phenomena pmsl. PPVS
