That Night (Time of Day 40)

Bette let herself into Tina’s apartment. The lights were on in the living room, but Tina wasn’t there or in the kitchen area. “T?”

She heard movement, and saw Tina come out from Angelica’s room, holding a finger to her mouth, indicating that Bette should be quiet.

“What’s up?” Bette asked, trying to keep her tone low.

“I just got her to sleep?”

    “Is she still being fussy?”

“Babe, she’s been sick. I think that’s why she’s been crying so much today.”

    “Sick?”

“Sick,” Tina confirmed. “She vomited in the car on the way home.”

Vomited? “You didn’t call me.” Why didn’t she call me? “Did you call the doctor?”

“Yes, Bette, I called the doctor.”

    “Does she have a fever?”

“No.” Tina shook her head along with the word. “No fever. Probably a stomach bug. They said keep an eye on her, but she probably doesn’t need to go in.”

“Let me go check on her.” After all, if Angelica was sick, she needed tending right. Bette stepped towards the child’s room, only to feel Tina’s hand on her shoulder.

“Please, I just got her down.”

    “But if she’s sick…”

    “Bette?”

Pausing for a moment, Bette could see the day’s strain reflected on Tina’s face. “Please. I’m afraid she’ll wake up again. It’s been such a rough day on her.”

“Someone should check on her.” Wasn’t that sensible? What if she vomited in her crib? So many things could happen.

“A few minutes. Please?” Tina rubbed her hand across her forehead as she repeated the request. “Just a few minutes.”

Bette reached out and took hold of Tina’s hand. “I’m just worried, T.”

    “I know. So am I.”

    “You didn’t call me.”

    “I’ve been a little busy.”

    “I could have helped.”

    “What more could you do?”

To Bette, that almost seemed like her help was not wanted or warranted. “She’s my daughter, too.”

“She is your daughter.” Tina stressed the words. “But there was really nothing to do but hold her, keep her clean, and try to get her to relax.”

“You shouldn’t have to deal with this all alone.” A new tactic, perhaps one that would get a better response.

    1. As one who had the flu about 2 weeks ago, I can assure you that puking takes precedence over all plans. At least I wasn’t in the car. Bette’s impulses in regards to Angelica are noble enough, but as in the case of the baby sitter, it sounds like she really hasn’t had much baby maintenence duty. But if she plays her cards right… I will refrain from stating what I think she picked up at her house.

    2. I’m dying to know what the gift was! Life’s little exegencies have a way of taking precedence. Tina will see that Bette is truly in for all of it and for the long haul. I’m glad she didn’t bolt! Thanks!

    3. Echo Techie – The Plan B story was one of my all time faves…and this story is great. I feel like I’m a broken record – more please when possible.

    4. Awwwwww…poor little Angelica having the stomach flu. Bette should stick around to help…and she shouldn’t worry about waiting for the “perfect time” to give Tina that “thing” that she picked up at the house…she should just go for it! Great story! Can’t wait for more!

    5. A mother’s love and caring are never ending. Tina took care of her baby well their baby and still could give a half smile to Bette when asked a question.

    6. Pseud, I just re-read this post and realized that 1) I never commented the first time around, 2)its been almost a week since you posted and I’m having withdrawls and 3) most importantly I forgot to recognize your awesome achievement of over 200 posts, well done mate – SORTED. We all miss reading your tale but can definitely relate to life being just too stressful. We’re here if you need us!! Hope to see you back on the boards soon and, really, 200 posts is massive. Congrats!!

    7. I’m with Rau. Best thing Bette can do is get Tina to go rest while she handles cleaning up and checking on Angelica. Then after maybe she can cuddle with her.

    8. This is my first time commenting…. (a lurking silent reader!) Thank you for telling such a wonderful story. Looking forward to your next post!

    9. Sorry about the s-t-r-e-s-s, hopefully crazy time doesn’t last too much longer. The last time I tried watching Sesame Street for old time’s sake, it’d been re-packaged and re-branded into the Elmo show… and it was total and utter suck. Anyway. Right, the chapter: clean-up duty maybe doesn’t fit into the grand plans, but it’s what’s needed and if Bette’s going to be there, she has to be there for all of it. Thanks for the post, pseud.

    10. Congratulations on your milestone post! That’s wonderful…as is this story. You describe this so realistically, it’s only happened once to my little one and it was JUST like this! Well…minus Bette who will hopefully take care of both Angie and Tina to warm Tina’s heart even more.

    11. Congratulations on #200. Love your writing. Please let Bette put her plans aside for the moment and take over the cleanup and baby duties for Tina. Bette is most needed at the moment for that help. Have Tina lie down for a little bit and then sit with Tina after she has cleaned up and started the laundy. Great story as always.

    12. Happy 200th…and 1! Another great post as always. I’m usually a silent reader but the milestone propmted me to make my presence known. Congratulations. You’re an excellent writer and THIS is an excellent story. Thank you for writing this.

    13. Well, you know what happens after the baby gets the flu…the adults get it too. Maybe they can take turns being there for each other. Great post, I really felt Tina at the end of her rope and Bette trying to figure out what to do and how to fit in. Contragts!

    14. Hey Pseud, Another fine chapter. Much congrats and gratitude for your firstr 200 chapters. 201 is fabulous. Love how outta of water Bette is with a sick and screaming infant. Tina did just the right thing and gave Bette a slice of her day. I do hope that Bette’s grand gesture involved a proposal; either going steady, moving in or marriage would be wonderful. Whatever it is I know it will be a pleasure to read. Please take care of yourself too. Exercise or massage are good for stress so go out and enjoy either. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.

    15. Congrats on having past your 200th post! Just like the others, I also love this story, and constantly check for new updates. Thanks for the post.

    16. Ohh, Bette good intentions but sometimes it comes off as controling. I hope she picked up something special. I’m not even going to guess. I’ll just wait and hope its something good. I’m glad she stayed. Sorry about the stressful regular life. Hopefully it gets better. Post when you get a chance.

    17. God I love this story…I’m so hooked. I hope Bette helps Tina with the clean up and shows she can do some of the “not so fun” stuff.

    18. i love this story, and let bette take of some things while tina rest it will give bette more practice in the future and plus show tina that they are loved.p.p.s.

    19. not juice and water. gatorade. puts the electrolytes back in from the puking. i LOVE the smell of baby puke. or toddler puke. dont know which is worse. yeah bette taking care of a sick kid is pretty tiring. great story, i want to know the plans also. thanks.
