The Absence of One chapter 16

“Bette?” the former senator prodded gently.

She blinked, Barbara’s voice breaking her out of her reverie. Not knowing how to answer, Bette tried to buy more time by gazing at the photo she took with Angelica. The thought of her daughter warmed her, affording her a sense of peace.

When she returned her attention to Barbara, she found the woman offering nothing and everything to her unconditionally. “Yes.”

The pure joy that filled Barbara’s eyes was refreshing to Bette. It felt good to know someone had desired her so completely. Someone who was her equal.

They stayed that way for long moments, neither wanting to break the spell they were in just yet. Reality would come knocking soon enough, and they were content to consider the rivulet of possibilities Bette’s answer had opened up.

“Shall we?” Barbara finally asked when she realized they were wasting precious time.

Bette nodded, getting up from the couch and gathered her things. She glanced at Barbara while putting on her jacket, offering a nervous smile.

“I’m ready,” Bette announced as she held the door open. “James, forward all my calls to my cell phone.”

“Will do,” the man flashed a knowing grin at both women. “Enjoy the rest of your day.”

Barbara chuckled at the blush that crept onto Bette’s face. She waved him goodbye, knowing she had made a powerful ally in Bette’s assistant.

“So what are we going to do now?” Bette asked as they exited the building.

“It’s almost 4 so we have about two hours to get ready,” the former senator replied. “We could go get ready and I’ll come pick you up at 6 or we can skip it altogether and spend the day in bed.”

“Tempting,” the dean quipped. “I take it you know the way to my place?”

Barbara smiled; she knew courting Bette Porter was no easy task. She waved her driver over, turning to regard the woman. “I will as soon as my driver has your address.”

“You mean my favorite politician does not have that information in a dossier already?”

Throwing her head back in laughter, Barbara said, “An efficient politician would have that and more in her hands already, but I don’t want to be a politician in our relationship. And I must say, I enjoy finding things out about you on my own.”

    1. These last two chapters had my heart racing and not because of Barbara and Bette but the fact that Bette and Tina maybe history. I was thinking bummer another story that I will stop reading because of my breaking Tibette heart.

    2. Thanks for this post skydiver. I wish Wednesday evening would get here already. I guess I’m blind when it comes to Bette & Tina…the on-screen chemistry between them just makes my head swim. I can’t imagine them with anyone else because of that sizzling chemistry they have. Watching Jodi & Bette on the show makes me feel sick to my stomach because not only is the ‘hot’ chemistry not there; what is there, feels more like ‘sis’ chemistry… yuk! I love your story and your writing is wonderful. More Please?

    3. I’m loving this story. The Senator was the one watching and waiting, huh… not surprised. I think Tina beat her to the punch, sigh of relief. Tina’s not going to like this turn of events, can’t wait to see the fireworks between Tina and Barbara. Barbara’s got it bad. I don’t blame her. Great post.

    4. while I love me some Dana Delaney/the senator…i love Tina and Bette a whole bunch more….so I’m hoping your story does not end with a Barbara/Bette combo…hard isn’t it when the audience is so biased????? Never mind, the writing is excellent. I guess I might break my tibette heart by reading on…I have survived such breakups so far without any permanent trauma, Lmao. Going backwards to catch up now. PPS

    5. Angie Mosby…hey I can’t help but agree with your comment about feeling sick watching B and Jodi becuz of the sis factor…It’d be the same now for me as watching Bette with any of the ‘friends’ especially her best friend Alice and her best buddy, Shane…and as for Jenny, god help us all if either Tina (as has been suggested) or Bette got with dangerous Jenny.
