The Absence of One chapter 16

“You look absolutely stunning,” Barbara said simply, her eyes never leaving the perfection that is Bette’s body.

“You’re not too shabby yourself,” Bette returned the compliment, openly ogling the woman.

“The mayor’s going to be very jealous of me.”

“Why is that?” Bette asked, amused at their subtle staring match.

“Because I’ll have the most beautiful woman in the room on my hand.” Barbara stepped up to Bette, her hands feeling the material wrapped around the woman. “The suit becomes you.”

“Shall we?” she stepped out of Barbara’s personal space, holding a hand out to her as she made her way to the door.

Dinner was surprisingly enjoyable, given the fact half of the people in attendance were politicians. Although Barbara had not said it outright the dean was her date, it was plain for the world to see.

They spent time chatting with others, occasionally glancing at each other across the room. As the night wore on, they gravitated toward each other, their heads in close quarters as they spoke of the artwork in the room.

“Enjoying yourself so far?” Barbara leaned in to whisper to Bette as they sat down for dinner.

“The current company makes it better,” Bette smiled.

“I’m glad, because the mayor’s wife is eyeing you like a water fountain in a desert.”

“Oh?” she raised an eyebrow. “And how would you know that, Barbara?”

A slow, sly grin appeared. “Us politicians have our ways.”

When the car arrived at Bette’s house hours later, the two women had learned more about each other. Barbara turned and flashed a smile at the woman. “May I walk you to the door?”

Smiling, Bette stepped out and waited for Barbara to exit. They walked in silence, only stopping at the door. “Thanks for dinner tonight. I had fun.”

There was something infectious about the woman’s smile that made Barbara melt. “The pleasure was all mine.”

“Would you like to come in for a nightcap?” Bette asked, not wanting the night to end.

Her heart skipped a beat. “Don’t get my hopes up, Bette.”

The tall brunette blushed. “I’m sorry, that wasn’t my intention.”

    1. These last two chapters had my heart racing and not because of Barbara and Bette but the fact that Bette and Tina maybe history. I was thinking bummer another story that I will stop reading because of my breaking Tibette heart.

    2. Thanks for this post skydiver. I wish Wednesday evening would get here already. I guess I’m blind when it comes to Bette & Tina…the on-screen chemistry between them just makes my head swim. I can’t imagine them with anyone else because of that sizzling chemistry they have. Watching Jodi & Bette on the show makes me feel sick to my stomach because not only is the ‘hot’ chemistry not there; what is there, feels more like ‘sis’ chemistry… yuk! I love your story and your writing is wonderful. More Please?

    3. I’m loving this story. The Senator was the one watching and waiting, huh… not surprised. I think Tina beat her to the punch, sigh of relief. Tina’s not going to like this turn of events, can’t wait to see the fireworks between Tina and Barbara. Barbara’s got it bad. I don’t blame her. Great post.

    4. while I love me some Dana Delaney/the senator…i love Tina and Bette a whole bunch more….so I’m hoping your story does not end with a Barbara/Bette combo…hard isn’t it when the audience is so biased????? Never mind, the writing is excellent. I guess I might break my tibette heart by reading on…I have survived such breakups so far without any permanent trauma, Lmao. Going backwards to catch up now. PPS

    5. Angie Mosby…hey I can’t help but agree with your comment about feeling sick watching B and Jodi becuz of the sis factor…It’d be the same now for me as watching Bette with any of the ‘friends’ especially her best friend Alice and her best buddy, Shane…and as for Jenny, god help us all if either Tina (as has been suggested) or Bette got with dangerous Jenny.
