The Absence of One chapter 27

    “You saw Tina yesterday?”

Kit nodded. “She came in for breakfast with my little Boo and we got to talk for a little while.”

“And?” Bette was curious. Her sister had voiced her resentment toward Tina on many occasions.

“She told me that you were going to spend more time together, just the three of you,” Kit began. “I wasn’t sure if she meant you two are dating again.”

    “Did you ask her?”

“Yes. She said she doesn’t know, but I got the impression that she wants to,” Kit answered cautiously. “I don’t know what Tina had planned, but she was practically beaming when she told me you were meeting for lunch.”

“It was a surprise visit,” Bette said.

“What happened?” the older Porter asked slowly, knowing no information would be available unless Bette chose to share.

“We were having such a good time, no fights or distractions. But then something clicked. I almost kissed her.”

“Bette, you’re not making any sense.”

She took a deep breath, knowing the next words were hard. “I love Tina, I always will. But I’m not in love with her anymore, Kit. I thought I was, but now I know it’s not Tina. It’s the idea of being a family with Angelica and Tina.”

“And you found that out just as you were ready to kiss her? In public?” Kit clarified.

    “Yeah,” Bette whispered.

    “What happened next?”

Bette closed her eyes as she remembered the events from yesterday. “I told her I was crazy about her. But I couldn’t go down that road anymore. It was too painful and destructive.”

Kit waited for Bette to continue, watching her closely for any signs of distress. She had a front row seat of the past few years’ downward spiral, and it was hard for her to stay silent.

“Do what’s best for yourself, Bette.”

When she opened her eyes, she could only see the love reflecting in Kit’s. “I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing.”

“Baby girl, there’s no road map to life,” Kit offered. “We won’t know it’s right unless we try it.”

She frowned slightly; her lunch long forgotten. “I don’t want to hurt Tina and I certainly don’t want to lead her on.”

    1. Just read the last three chapters…enjoyed them so much that I am definitely going back and starting at the beginning!! Don’t know how I missed this story! Thanks!

    2. I’m loving Bette and Barbara. Always have. These two are hot together. I can see Bettes hesitance about Tina, being burned so many times. Glad to see Bette has finally come to terms and picked a direction-a very sexy direction. Nice story.

    3. Bette is totally becoming a wimp. If she doesn’t love Tina then tell her. She is toally stringing Tina and Barbara, this is going to cause major drama.
