The Absence of One chapter 27

“Then explain it to her. Don’t shut her out like you do so well.” Her next question was moot, but Kit threw it out in the open anyway. “Are you seeing someone?”

    “What? No,” Bette exclaimed.

“Bette,” Kit’s tone indicated she knew there was more.

“Not really,” the younger Porter relented. She massaged her temples, stalling her answer. “There might be someone.”

Kit watched her baby sister closely. She hadn’t expected Bette’s answer, but the previous day’s events clicked. “It’s the senator, isn’t it?”

The almost imperceptible nod came after a long period of silence. “What are you going to do, baby girl?”

“I … want to clear things up with Tina first,” Bette admitted. “I told Barbara all I could offer her right now is a friendship, but my heart never listens.”

    “Did you sleep with her?”

“No,” Bette sighed. “No matter what I do, someone’s going to get hurt.”

“Tina gave up any claim to you the day she left,” Kit said bitterly. “She shouldn’t expect you to be alone for the rest of your life.”

“I’m not alone, Kit,” she corrected her sister. “I have you and Angelica.”

“That’s not enough, Bette. Baby sis, you have so much love to share, don’t hide it,” Kit reached over to hold Bette’s hand. “You surround yourself with all these beautiful things, but you’re beautiful inside, too. Don’t hide that part of yourself just because one person thought otherwise.”

“I’m not,” Bette argued weakly. “I’m not trying to hide myself. Yet every time I try to move on, there’s Tina. She’s always there, on the edge. Reminding me of what I had thrown away.”

Kit didn’t bother to mask her distaste. “You’ve paid for your mistakes 10 times around. You shouldn’t have to keep paying them for the rest of your life.”

    Bette stayed silent.

“Oh come on, Bette! You don’t believe that. You can’t believe that,” Kit exclaimed. “All that high-priced education and this is what you come up with?”

Their spirited conversation drew attention from the nearby tables, much to the chagrin of the younger Porter. She dragged her chair closer to Kit, her brows furrowed in annoyance.

    1. Just read the last three chapters…enjoyed them so much that I am definitely going back and starting at the beginning!! Don’t know how I missed this story! Thanks!

    2. I’m loving Bette and Barbara. Always have. These two are hot together. I can see Bettes hesitance about Tina, being burned so many times. Glad to see Bette has finally come to terms and picked a direction-a very sexy direction. Nice story.

    3. Bette is totally becoming a wimp. If she doesn’t love Tina then tell her. She is toally stringing Tina and Barbara, this is going to cause major drama.
