    It was not long before Bette walked in. She came up behind me and tapped me twice on my shoulder. Then leaned over and quickly put her cheek against mine.

    PART EIGHT: ORANGE GROVE, CALIFORNIA

    Chapter 3

    I turned only my head from the Chavez painting , to the left and was aware that Bette was directly behind my shoulder. I could smell that bouquet of flowers on her again as I inhaled deeply, saying , “Yes, I do like it.”

    I looked at the painting again. “I like the face and the memory. There are some things one just does not forget.”

    “I asked him to paint it.”

    I smiled, “Well, if I recall, my girl wasn’t wearing all those ruffles and petticoats. She had on some leather britches and a cashmere sweater that lifted up to show her bare belly, when she snapped her fingers over her head while all the men were drooling tequila.”

    “You remember it better than she does.”

    I looked to the left again, not really able to see her but consumed with her presence. “That’s because I was the lucky one who always got to take her home.”

    “You looked after her very well."

    “I was so crazy in love with her that I still look for her in every one I meet.“

    “And she has the same problem.”

    I felt her breath on my neck and asked, “Then why was it so hard for her to call me just for a lunch one day?”

    “She will call you.”

    “I wonder how many more years will go by."

    “Days, not years.”

    I heard her retreating heels on the tile floor, as she walked away from me and I saw Howie coming toward me. Before he could speak, someone suddenly slipped their arms around me from behind and gave me a hug. I could smell an intoxicating aftershave.

    “Hello Sissee Gardner,“ he said.

    I was instantly bewildered until, from the side I could see a honey brown face and I spun around to look up at Terry Johnson, Bette’s one-time boss. We were delighted to see each other, as we exchanged rapid fire one-liners, until I introduced him to Howie.

    The two men exchanged pleasantries and then Terry asked me about my screenplay. I gave him a brief update and he handed me his card, urging me to send it to him. I told him I would and soon after that he said he was going to go find his favorite competitor, Bette Porter.

    1. kbergin, Given Sissee’s track record of being a serial cheater, always searching for what she had with Bette in the beginning, I think we can pretty much guess what is on her mind. As for the painting, Bette may have realized how important that time was for Sissee and wanted to let her know it was a valuable time for her too. I think the monetary value of the painting meant nothing compared to it representing the time they spent together.

    2. September, I love your imagination! No, I don’t think Sissee will go after James. Remember, James showed up at Melvin’s funeral with a boyfriend, so that’s out. As for when Tina comes into Bette’s life, well, I hope you will continue to read on and on because you will see Sissee will remain in the picture but…..well, I better not give it away.

    3. Wow! That is one expensive painting Bette gave to Sissee, but it’s the sentiment not the price that counts. I loved how they recalled the events of that moment. A memory that will be with them both forever. Loved Bette’s mom, as always. Soooo, I’m wondering where this is going. Are our girls going to have a little affair? Can’t wait for the next chapter. Thanks!

    5. No affair for them, the now will make better friends. Howie seens to be a great guy,and they do have children. If Sissy has her affairs with others,that is her unrestfulness,not Bettes. Friends yes,lovers No thanks

    7. There so will be an affair I just feel it. But the sad part will be that Bette will get hurt. Or will she leave sissee on time to let her feel what she felt everyday of her life by flashing Tina in her face? I know that’s not right but I just feel with Bette. But what will happen if/when Tina is in Bette’s life? Sissee won’t go after James I hope…you know a little show down at the office or something like that?
