The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 8, Chapter 3)
No sooner had he left than suddenly I saw and heard Bette’s mom coming toward me with her arms outstretched. We embraced enthusiastically. She was as vociferous and as handsomely glamorous as ever. When I introduced her to Howie and he extended his hand to her, she grabbed it in both of her hands and said, looking at me, “Jesus Christ Sissee! Is this who you gave up my beautiful daughter for?”
She and I laughed. Howie took it in stride with a John Wayne look of amusement and embarrassment. Maxine then reached out for a lady who was with her, standing quietly to the side.
“Sissee and Howie, I would like you to meet my other daughter, Kate Porter.”
“It’s Kit, mom. Kit Porter,” she said, offering me her hand. I took it but also gave her a hug because I felt I knew so much about her through Bette, even if it was eight years ago.
“I am so delighted to meet you Kit,” I said.
Kit seemed very soft spoken and inhibited, even to the point of being shy, so unlike Bette but I liked her immediately. We exchanged conversation for a short while, during which she told me that she was now living with Bette in Venice and was a lounge singer at the Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica.
When the conversation ebbed, the flamboyant Maxine gave us a parting hug and ta ta and they were on their way.
.
It was not much later that Howie and I looked for Bette to offer our parting compliments on her fine collection of art and to wish her the best of luck with her gallery. It was difficult to get to her and when we finally did our accolades were brief since she was in demand. I leaned forward and put my cheek to hers and whispered, “I’m still very proud of you.“ She whispered back, “I’ll call you.”
She shook Howie’s hand and said, “Thank you so much for coming.”
“It was our pleasure,” said Howie, “And put us on your mailing list for future shows so I get a chance to wear this suit again.”
Five days after we had gone to Bette’s gallery, a package arrived at our front door in Orange Grove, addressed to me. It was a large package, carefully boxed and wrapped. It was from the Bette Porter Art Gallery. I unwrapped it carefully and saw that it was the Chavez painting of the flamenco dancer.

kbergin, Given Sissee’s track record of being a serial cheater, always searching for what she had with Bette in the beginning, I think we can pretty much guess what is on her mind. As for the painting, Bette may have realized how important that time was for Sissee and wanted to let her know it was a valuable time for her too. I think the monetary value of the painting meant nothing compared to it representing the time they spent together.
September, I love your imagination! No, I don’t think Sissee will go after James. Remember, James showed up at Melvin’s funeral with a boyfriend, so that’s out. As for when Tina comes into Bette’s life, well, I hope you will continue to read on and on because you will see Sissee will remain in the picture but…..well, I better not give it away.
Wow! That is one expensive painting Bette gave to Sissee, but it’s the sentiment not the price that counts. I loved how they recalled the events of that moment. A memory that will be with them both forever. Loved Bette’s mom, as always. Soooo, I’m wondering where this is going. Are our girls going to have a little affair? Can’t wait for the next chapter. Thanks!
An affair will only hurt them both again–they just don’t need to go there IMO.
No affair for them, the now will make better friends. Howie seens to be a great guy,and they do have children. If Sissy has her affairs with others, that is her unrestfulness, not Bettes. Friends yes, lovers No thanks
bettyvhall, Thanks for your opinion. I don’t think you will be disappointed in what transpires.
There so will be an affair I just feel it. But the sad part will be that Bette will get hurt. Or will she leave sissee on time to let her feel what she felt everyday of her life by flashing Tina in her face? I know that’s not right but I just feel with Bette. But what will happen if/when Tina is in Bette’s life? Sissee won’t go after James I hope…you know a little show down at the office or something like that?
ld18, So you think an affair will only hurt them. That is a very wise opinion but we will have to wait to see what happens. Meanwhile, thanks for being a reader and your comments are very important to me.
