    The Black Flag

The deck was empty as all the hands were down on the main deck manning guns. Shane glanced over the bulwark to find a large beautiful pirate ship. It’s white sails were full and it’s power could be seen in the way it held itself against fire. It’s keel painted a bright red Shane smiled slightly at the sight of the classic Jolly Roger flag atop it’s main mast. The words ‘The Robin’ were scrolled handsomely along the side of the beautiful ship. Shane glanced down to the main deck to see all the soldiers were busy trying to load the cannons and pistols before the pirates boarded them. Shane considered for a moment waiting until the pirates set a plank between the ships for easier boarding but thought better of it knowing that at any second the ships could part again and go their separate ways.

She glanced around quickly to see if there were any spare grappling lines about and cursed finding none. If she had one she could easily swing across from the mizzen mast and land on the deck of the Robin. She sighed in slight frustration. She could try to run and jump the gap between the ships but the distance was still much to far. Probably a good 20 yards at least. Shane shook her head. One last idea still left, so she grabbed a line responsible for holding up one side of the large sails at the aft of the ship and prayed that she didn’t end up killing herself.

“Here goes nothing…” Shane whispered to herself as she held the line with a strong grip before using her cutlass to cut the line. It sprung up with the speed and force of a cannon and Shane had to clench her teeth to repress the pain it brought in her shoulder as it launched her up and over the bulwark of the ship and the sail fell from the cut line creating a mess on the deck.

Letting go at the peek of propulsion she soared through the air some what like she was running and hit the water next to The Robin. The sound of the cannons were drowned out by the water around her ears and the bubbles of air rising to meet the surface. She took a deep breath of air as she surfaced again thanking the gods that she’d never have to do that again. She shook her head to get the water out of her eyes and quickly searched the water and found her hat that had been pulled from her head when she entered the water. She grabbed it quick ignoring the shouts on the ships and the sounds of gunfire. She quickly swam to the Jacob’s ladder that occupied the side of the pirate ship and she hurried up the side of the vessel as more guns fired and cracked holes into the ships. She grabbed onto the scuppers and hauled herself up over the bulwark of the ship. falling on her back before taking a few deep breaths.

    1. Amazing! Shane makes such a convincing pirate ;)The concept didn’t seem at all impossible to me, I’m sure there were many people like this on the high seas.Definitely would read more, 5/5!

    2. Excellent! I had in the past thought of doing a pirate theme but gave it up because it required too much research. You’ve done a fabulous job of this first chapter and I look forward to reading more. Thanks for posting! Lin
