    The Call – Part Three

Bette lay on her back and stared at the ceiling. Shed turned off the light at Tinas request but sleep wouldnt claim her.

She felt Tinas body shift in the bed, felt Tinas hand as she laid it comfortingly on her stomach, its warmth as it spread.

Baby, whats wrong.. Tina said quietly in the darkness.

Bettes protective instincts kicked in and she opened her mouth to say nothing but what came out instead was I shouldnt have dragged you into work today..

Youre sorry I went? Tina said the words tinged with the hurt she felt on hearing Bettes confession.

Bette reached down and put her hand over Tinas No..never she said infusing her voice with warmth and love.

Bette struggled with her feelings and how to voice them so theyd not be misunderstood. She was afraid of hurting Tina. It was so easy to say the wrong thing or to say the right thing but in the wrong way.

She found it so much easier to wait and think things through, say it later or express her thinking through some action and avoid the words altogether. But she was aware sometimes that shed missed the boat, that the words just didnt mean the same when they were said a day or a week later.

She was trying to change since theyd got back together, knew how important it was; how comforting Tinas words were to her, how powerful they could be when she was feeling down or insecure. And she wanted to be able to do that for Tina, to give back a little of what she felt from her.

Bette twisted onto her side so she could be a little closer. She kept hold of Tinas hand, squeezed it lightly so shed know somehow that Bette was just trying to assemble the words she needed.

It was dark, the moon only a sliver. She couldnt see Tinas face but she could see the outline of her body as she lay in the dark alongside her.

She knew Tina so well, knew that her hair would be fanned out on the pillow behind her and that her eyes would be open wide and staring into Bettes face, encouraging her.

Tina freed her hand from Bettes, ran it slowly up and down Bettes arm, a gesture of comfort that was so familiar. She could hear Tinas voice in her head even though no words were spoken tonight; you can do it, I love you well be OK, all those reassuring words that Tina just knew how to say so well.

    1. Hi, Oz. Just wanted to let you know you have a new fan…me! I read this story then was compelled to read “Love Me Tender.” I love the way you write–your stories are beautiful, heartfelt and depict life with such realism without having to resort to excessive angs-ridden drama to capture tension and drama. I eagerly awaiting to read “Listen to your heart.” Having read a glimpse with “The call,” I know I won’t be disappointed. Please post that story soon! Thanks :)

    2. wonderful…good for Bette to realize that the slow constant beat is comforting not ‘boring’ — very, very well expressed…wonderful chapter….thanks

    3. “But its always there, you just need to stop sometimes and focus on it, to hear its slow constant beat, to feel the comfort of it”. — Wonderful!

I love how this Tina recognizes the need to help Bette express what she’s feeling.

    4. Beautifully written. The way you wrote about how love revolves from the courting stages till their current relationship really touched me.

      Thanks Oz…:)
