    The Canvas of Our Life….Ch14

She sat behind Tina slightly to the side so that she could see her face. She was indeed crying and Bette suddenly felt a pit in her stomach. She suddenly felt enormous sorrow for Tina. With her heart in her throat, she spoke almost inaudibly to Tina. “I’m so sorry.” To Bette’s surprise Tina laughed out loud through her tears.

“You find that funny?” Bette asked.

“No Bette, it’s just thatyou’re the only one who has nothing to apologize for. You’ve simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I should be apologizing to you for bringing my crazy life crashing into yours. My tearshave nothing to do with you. I’m so worried about my Dad. I don’t know what’s going on at the hospital. I just need to make that call.”

Bette turned her body towards Tina reached her hands to her shoulder to comfort her. Tina responded by holding Bette’s hand and placed one gentle kiss on her fingers. Bette felt electricity rip through her body and she shuddered at her touch.

“I’ll get you out of here.” Bette whispered as Tina rested her cheek on Bette’s hand.

Tina lifted her head as another officer led Eric into the room. With a scoff he sat down and looked at their hands that had not moved still embracing each other. He looked at Tina and shook his head and condemned her with one look. And for a moment she felt it cut like a knife. She hadn’t known what it felt like to be disapproved of. Everything she had ever known suddenly made no sense. She wrinkled her brow at him in confusion. Bette squeezed her hand reassuringly and Tina felt a wave of confidence. At that she had a revelation. “I need her.” She thought.

“Who wants to make the first phone call!” shouted an officer from the desk.

Before Tina could respond Eric jumped up and headed for the phone. Bette reacted immediately at his deliberate display of selfishness.

    “You selfish *****!”

Eric turned slowly and narrowed his eyes to her. He threatened her without words and then smiled cynically.

    “Coward” she snapped.

    “Dike!” he replied.

“THAT’S ENOUGH!” yelled the officer. He nudged Eric by the arm to head towards the phone. Eric laughed mockingly at the two of them and disappeared with the officer.

“I guess these are his true colors.” Tina said in disbelief.

“Tina, my attorney will get both of us out of here today. When he does I will get you to the hospital. But baby listen, I don’t want to make things more complicated for you right now. If you want me to go, I’ll go. But if not, I’m here for you.”

Tina turned and looked into Bette’s beautiful brown eyes. She had never let go of her hand, but was now caressing it lovingly.

    “Betteyou called me baby.”

“Ohuh sorry Tina. I didn’t mean to be forward. I just”

“Shhh” Tina said placing a finger to Bette’s lips.

“You can call me baby anytime you want. But only if you mean it.”

    “I mean it T. I don’t know what’s happening here. I feel so many things. Tina I think I”

Again the officer interrupted her. “Ms. Kennardyour turn.”

    1. Eric the coward is right. He’s probably calling Tina’s mother to help his sorry ass out. He’ll get his due…when he least expects it. It so sweet how Bette is consoling Tina and thinking of her before anyone or anything else. I’m glad Tina finally sees Eric’s true colors. I hope nothing happens to her father before she gets to see him. Thanks for the update.
