    The Journey 56

Tina: I turn the water off and stand in the shower alcove for a few seconds. I wipe my face with my hands and flick the water from my hands. With one hand I reach out and pull in the warm fluffy towel that Bette has bought in and left for me. It feels heavenly. I dry myself and look in the mirror. I see myself looking back and silently ask myself why I did this to me and Bette and our children. I watch myself as I think. I pull on the dressing gown, it too smells fresh. I reach out and place both hands on the vanity bar in front of me and look down at the ground. "Fuck, I don’t know what to do" I say out loud and shake my head still looking at the ground, occasional drops of water hit the ground, no doubt from my wet hair. I look up and into the mirror, willing myself to keep hope and keep trying. I see my reflection and instantly I see Bette’s face in the mirror. I have no idea how long she has been there. I did not hear the door open. Her expression is unreadable. Her eyes meet mine in the mirror.

Bette: I try to compose myself before I speak. Although I had known that this must be taking a toll on Tina, I guess I had not considered how difficult it must be for her. Perversely I think if anyone should understand, I should. "I…..I……I think Jennifer is hungry. I’m sorry….. I knocked but you didn’t answer….." I stumble on my sentence not because I am sorry but because I do not want to make it more awkward for Tina, clearly I interrupted a private thought.

Tina: I watch Bette in the mirror. I watch her expression, her hand movements. She does not move further in or out of the bathroom. I look down. "It’s OK. I’ll be out in a minute." I try to maintain an even tone. With that Bette silently closes the door and leaves.

Bette: I hang onto the door knob on the other side of the door for a second. How ironic there is so little space between us but so much in that space. I walk over to the front window where Laurel is playing with Choco. I hear Tina come out and she makes her way into the bedroom where Jennifer is. I follow her into the room and sit on the edge of the bed next to Tina. "Is she hungry?" I ask to confirm my earlier suspicion.

    1. ok, unless i missed something, bette actually did have the affair with candace, but tina had an internet affair. Tina forgives bette and takes her back, but bette cant do the same? hmmmm….

    2. I feel like it’s very hard for them to get back. It’s also hard for Bette to fit in the family picture. Her relations with Jennifer and Laurel are more like babysitter-children or mother’swoman-children. Tina didn’t make effort to make Bette the mother.

    3. Sometimes baby steps are the hardest, but if you keep putting one foot in front of the other, you can go places you only dreamed of before. Great job UBK!

    4. I liked this chapter – their estrangment and mixed up feelings is really written well – it isn’t easy to open your heart again but I like how you had Bette see that she has been in Tina’s shoes. I so enjoy what you share with us.

    5. Baby steps, baby steps! It’s almost painful to see them like this. I’m hoping that you will bring them back together. Thanks for another wonderful update.

    6. I’m glad that they are going to spend the day together. It seems to me that they need some good bonding time where they can have fun and remember good times before they have their conversation. Looking forward to the next post.

    7. Unbeknown, Finally some tentative motion in the forward and hopeful direction. These gals need to be truthful and honestly esplain to one another their thoughts, hopes and desires for the future while putting the past to rest. Acceptance of their former failings and faults is the only way to settle the past and provide a clear canvas to start building a better tomorrow on. Can’t wait to see where you take them next. Thank you so much for returning and continuing this wonderful adventure. Much gratitude and appreciation from Your Loyal Fan.

    8. Just aching for them to start communicating properly and to realise that they are meant to be together forever (despite what IC might think – Grr.) Please post soon and keep on writing. You are wonderful.

    9. At least they are taking baby steps forward and not leaping backwards. Both women have made major mistakes and both need to make an effort to forgive each other. If it is a family that they want for them and the girls then they have to put the past in the past and work towards the future. I know that it is easier said than done, but these two can make it work.

    10. your story get more amazing chapter by chapter you are a great writer and i cant wait for the next chapter. thanks for sharing.

    11. Nice chapter. Like seeing a happy family. Its amazing how you can capture them so well. Its a shame when someone gives up on a realtionship without every expaining what happened. Keep up the good writing.
