THE L WING Chapter 176
Narration of First Lady Tina Kennard-Porter
I leave Bette talking to her father -they both have wrongs to right and they have to do it now. I know how close Bette is to her father and Kit and it hurt that they excluded her from knowledge about Maggie. But equally I see why – even though I have told both of them that it was wrong. My first love and loyalty is to Bette.
I see that Leigh is standing alone in the garden – I grab a couple of bottles of water and a few sandwiches from a huge plate and stroll down to join her.
“You want some company? “ I ask
She turns and nods “Yeah “
I hand her two of the sandwiches and a bottle of water – she looks at me
“I don’t imagine you have eaten much since you arrived “
“No I haven’t “
“In that case – take more “
“No – two is enough “
I sit down under the shade – it’s a bit too warm for me despite the fact that its only spring – I am so going to suffer in the summer -by which time I will be three times the size that I am now. She joins me and eats the first sandwich so quickly that I worry her fingers might have disappeared with it.
“Are you going back to UCLA after this is all over? “
“Not straight away – I could take my exams in the fall. “
“What do you want to do when you graduate?”
“I don’t know – not for sure. My mom installed in me a love and a reverence for words. I have thought about teaching or journalism “
“I was a reporter “
“You won the BBC award for foreign correspondent for your reporting in Afghanistan”
I raise my eyebrows
“Yes – how did you know that? “
“I just do – I read some of your pieces – and – well I guess this is a naff thing to say but I just love your way with words “
“It’s not naff -thank you “
“What was it like living in a war zone? “

great chapter ally… the image of T, naked & pregnant comes to my mind… the one that appears at S2, chapter… 10, 11? a bit before Melvin died, she’s on her bed, sleeping… remember? Damn, that image was so hot… and if she’s awake now, damn!! LmaO! Please post soon, you’re doing an amazing job!

A pregnant Tina on the cover of Vogue? That’s an interesting mental image, Laurel Holloman was so beautiful and so brave in her acting pregnant. Tina could get the money for the Porter-Peabody fundation, it would be for a good cause, Can’t wait to read about Bette’s reaction to this possibility. Great chapter, you play so well with the emotions of everyone, and the chat between Tina and Melvin is a good opening to that biography book, these two think alike, they’re smart and sharp.
I’m trying to picture any one of the present and previous first ladies in tat sort of demi moore kind of cover page…let’s just say I’m having great difficulty visualizing it! As for Kennard…hmmm…me thinks Bette is going to issue an executive order when she finds out!!!
This similar to “An Indecent Proposal” in that there is a $1M prize for the photo. I actually think that it would be rude and disgusting for The First Lady of any country to do this. Can you imagine The Queen or Margaret Thatcher (when younger) or Princess Diana doing this? I think not.
Not too sure how P.O.T.U.S. Bette Porter will react to anything. She may be all for it, if it is done tastefully…the real question Tina needs to ask herself is how would it make her feel if Bette were the one pregnant and wanted to do this? Another great one Ally! You are THE BOMB!
Oh Ally…isn’t it great that even after so many chapters of this story you can still creat a stir!!?? :) I have to agree with azmama. Tina is the First Lady of the United States. Just because they are carving new territory as lesbians, doesn’t mean that she should disrespect that title. After all, this is a woman who has to meet and help create diplomacy with leaders around the world. Can’t imagine they would look at her with any kind of respect if she posed nude…or even semi nude for a magazine…any magazine. Demi Moore is a celebrity, an entertainer. Tina is not. Thanks for always making us think!!
is good to read how Bette and Leigh are handle the situation. Bette won’t be happy at all about the proposal that Tina got!
Well, I think George Bush has so thoroughly disrespected and disgraced the Office of the President that at this point nothing could bring anymore shame upon us so I say bring on the nudity!!

Great how Bette is relating to Leigh. Can’t wait for her reaction to Tina being offered a Million dollars to pose naked while pregnant. That magazine better take cover.
She can say that again Bette will never let Tina’s body be photographed no matter how much money she is offered. For her eyes only!

Re: the magazine cover. It’s been done. And done again, already. And Tina IS the first lady. And these days Demi Moore is Ashton Kutcher’s OLD lady. (And I say that with a certain amount of pain bein older than Demi). Tina doesn’t need the money, she should leave the offer on the table. And being so old, I’ve been trying to think of anybody who would have been able to bridge the highly polarized camps surrounding MLK and Malcolm X. I’m still thinking. Melvin is remarkable.
