“A bit different to my life at the moment “

“Mom used to look at you and Bette on the TV and say how it was obvious that you two loved each other. When you announced that you two were engaged – mom watched the TV all night – just channel hoping – she even taped it “
“Are you any less freaked by it all? “
She takes a long drink of water and smiles
“I think that it’s slowly sinking in – I just wanted to say goodbye “
“I know it’s very easy to think that you are the only person who feels that way but you’re not. Bette has so many questions that she will never get the answer to from her mom “
“Mom knew her you know? “
“Bette’s mom? “
“Yes -I don’t know if she knows that “
“I don’t think she does “
“Should I tell her? “
“Depends what she said about her “
“Mom said that she was strange “
“That’s what I have gathered. Leigh – Bette is as nervous about meeting you as you are about meeting her. Just try not to see her as the President – and yes I know that is easy for me to say “
I sense her behind me
““Hey babe “I look up into her dark eyes and smile at her
“Leigh – I want you to met Bette Porter “
Leigh looks at Bette for a few seconds then she must remember the protocol about nobody sitting when the President is standing – she hurries to her feet
“Sorry “she mutters. Bette smiles
“I am not your President right now – I’m your sister “Immediately Leigh’s eyes fill with tears and she drops her head. Bette looks at me – I gesture for her to comfort her. Bette pauses for a few seconds but quickly reaches across and puts her arms around her half sister.
“Its okay sweetie “Bette whispers
I rub my eyes – it is so typical that Bette does reach out to this scared young girl. Bette hugs her closer and whispers something in her ear – Leigh laughs and nods
When they ease apart Bette strokes Leigh’s face and looks at her

A pregnant Tina on the cover of Vogue? That’s an interesting mental image, Laurel Holloman was so beautiful and so brave in her acting pregnant. Tina could get the money for the Porter-Peabody fundation, it would be for a good cause, Can’t wait to read about Bette’s reaction to this possibility. Great chapter, you play so well with the emotions of everyone, and the chat between Tina and Melvin is a good opening to that biography book, these two think alike, they’re smart and sharp.
I’m trying to picture any one of the present and previous first ladies in tat sort of demi moore kind of cover page…let’s just say I’m having great difficulty visualizing it! As for Kennard…hmmm…me thinks Bette is going to issue an executive order when she finds out!!!
This similar to “An Indecent Proposal” in that there is a $1M prize for the photo. I actually think that it would be rude and disgusting for The First Lady of any country to do this. Can you imagine The Queen or Margaret Thatcher (when younger) or Princess Diana doing this? I think not.
Not too sure how P.O.T.U.S. Bette Porter will react to anything. She may be all for it, if it is done tastefully…the real question Tina needs to ask herself is how would it make her feel if Bette were the one pregnant and wanted to do this? Another great one Ally! You are THE BOMB!
Oh Ally…isn’t it great that even after so many chapters of this story you can still creat a stir!!?? :) I have to agree with azmama. Tina is the First Lady of the United States. Just because they are carving new territory as lesbians, doesn’t mean that she should disrespect that title. After all, this is a woman who has to meet and help create diplomacy with leaders around the world. Can’t imagine they would look at her with any kind of respect if she posed nude…or even semi nude for a magazine…any magazine. Demi Moore is a celebrity, an entertainer. Tina is not. Thanks for always making us think!!

Well, I think George Bush has so thoroughly disrespected and disgraced the Office of the President that at this point nothing could bring anymore shame upon us so I say bring on the nudity!!

Re: the magazine cover. It’s been done. And done again, already. And Tina IS the first lady. And these days Demi Moore is Ashton Kutcher’s OLD lady. (And I say that with a certain amount of pain bein older than Demi). Tina doesn’t need the money, she should leave the offer on the table. And being so old, I’ve been trying to think of anybody who would have been able to bridge the highly polarized camps surrounding MLK and Malcolm X. I’m still thinking. Melvin is remarkable.
