    T’was the night before the wedding and all through the house not a creature was stirring – only the boss

     

    I watch the alarm clock as it shows that the time becomes midnight, 1am, 2am. I get up and take some painkillers but I throw them up about thirty minutes later. I fill a hot water bottle and put that on my stomach but it hurts too much. Still I don’t ring anyone.

    I somehow fall into a very restless sleep – every time I move it hurts. It even hurts when I move my legs. If this is food poison it damn well sucks.

    When my alarm goes off at 7am I have barely slept more than 2 hours and I feel terrible. I get up and wish I hadn’t – my legs feel like they are not joined to the rest of my body – they are barely managing to support my weight.

     

     

     

     

    I put my robe on and walk very slowly out of my bedroom. Every step is agony . It is beginning to seep into my brain that this is not stomach ache or food poisoning. I am now scared – scared that today is not going to the greatest day of my personal life.

     

     

     

     

    I slump into a chair and rub my brow – it feels like touching a hot plate. I sit very still for a few minutes– I am just about to pick up the phone when Kit comes out – she is wearing PJ’s and a robe

     

     

     

    “Hey there babe = how are you feeling — oh my God Bette — you look deadly “

     

    “Kit — I don’t feel good “

     

    “What has the doctor said ? “

    “I haven’t rung anyone – I don’t want anything to stop the wedding “

     

     

    Kit comes across and touches my brow

     

     

     

    “You are burning up Bette “

     

    “I have to marry her “

    “No – you have to be well “

     

     

     

    “I don’t want to disappoint her and I want to have her as my wife “

     

    “Bette – honey – she loves you. She’ll wait forever for you”

     

    “No – I don’t want to wait to marry her “

     

    “Bette — can you actually walk down the aisle ? “

    “I don’t know “

     

     

    The phone rings and I get up very slowly. Kit stares at me

     

     

    “You can’t move Bette “

     

     

    Kit picks the phone up

     

     

    “Hey Shane — no — everything is not all right — get Bette a doctor. Yes its serious “

    I slump back down in my chair — the pain is excruciating . I start crying – I want to marry Tina but I know that this pain is serious. The next few minutes are crazy — dad gets up, Shane appears and my doctor appears.

     

     

     

    I am helped into my room and Clare examines me.

     

     

     

    She regards me with kindness

     

     

     

    “I know you don’t want to hear this today of all days but I don’t think you can get married today. In fact you need to get your Chief of Staff in”

     

    “Why — what’s wrong with me ? “

     

     

     

    “I am not 100% sure but I think you have appendicitis. You need to be in hospital and if its as serious as I think you are going to have to have an operation “

     

     

     

    “Can you give me painkillers to get me through the wedding ? “

     

    “You really want your memories of your wedding day to be about how much pain you were in and no I can’t – you are ill Bette — I need you in hospital “

     

     

     

    “Get Shane “

     

     

     

    Shane comes in – she looks worried

     

     

     

    “I’ve got appendicitis — find Peggy, get me the letter signing my powers over – cancel everything — but first of all -” I take Shane’s hand “Please tell Tina in person. The wedding is off “

The wedding is off.” Well she might if she wants to die. =O No, she better be smart enough to tell Tina that Bette is fuckin’ sicker than a dog. My first thought was some asshole poisoned Bette’s chili and then I figured it was her appendix.

    7. Man, poor bette…when is she going to catch a break! she just wants to marry her girl! you are clearly the queen of drama! I can’t help thinking of all those people who can in for the wedding! i would guess lots of other gov’t officials! maybe you’re making this a blessing in diguise and the hate groups don’t know the wedding is POSTPONED! (not off!) so they go ahead with their plans…which has bette saving everyone’s live with her health crisis!     22. Aw, shit. Reminds me of when I begged not to have my birthday party cancelled even though I was becoming feverish and coming down with measles or chicken pox or something. The party went on, I became ill and ran for the bathroom. My fun-loving brother grabbed me, swung me around to ask where I was going. My response was to throw up on his leg. I hope he was satisfied.
