    The Melvin Porter Phenomenon

Turning her attention back to Kit, Bette kept throwing out ridiculous ideas to explain the Melvin Porter phenomenon. “Is this one of Benjamin’s gimmicks where he either brainwashed or hypnotized him?”

“You know Benjamin had nothing to do with this. He’s a motivational speaker not a magician.”

“Well someone put a spell on him.” Bette insisted not realizing that she too was experiencing a transformation as the heaviness on her heart started to melt away bringing back the joyfulness of restored love.

“Bette, get serious. There’s no hocus-pocus at play here baby sis. If there is breath in our bodies we can transform ourselves. The only constant in life is change.” Kit scolded her baby sister. “Can you say that five years ago when I blew back into your life just barely hanging on; trying to make amends that you thought I could change? Do you remember our conversation that night?”

“You mean the night you broke into my house?” Bette smirked.

“I didn’t break in. You left the back-door open, but yes that’s the night. I was going through my 12-step program and one of the things I had to do was make amends with all the people that I hurt. I sat down and wrote everything I could remember that would have caused you pain when you were a little girl. Making you promises I never kept, blaming you for things I did, missing your birthdays and most of all disappearing from your life for so long. You accused me of not meaning it when I said I was sorry. You said I was just going through the motions like I did all the time. You thought I was there just to fill a requirement to get my driver’s license back after that DUI. I admit that was a motivator but you don’t know how scared I was, and how much courage it took just to come to you. I really was trying to get my life back Bette. You were always my heart, you and David. No matter how many times I bottomed out, I wasn’t prepared for your rejection. If it wasn’t for Tina being there that night you would have thrown me out of your house and kicked me to the curb.”

    2. I will wait forever for a update from you.

It is great to see Melvin like this.

And Bette has learned that she isn’t perfect and is so much more relaxed.

I love this story. Thank you for the update.

    3. I’m glad to see this update BAT!! I always enjoy your storytelling. I hope that this sudden change in Melvin doesn’t come at a price for Bette. I am glad Bette and Tina are working things out, hopefully Helena isn’t waiting in the background with a devious plot.

    4. Thanks for this great chapter, loved it. And I really like Melvin in this story and I’m very surprised at his level of comfort with the girls. So happy you have made him a changed man, wish he could have been so on the show. Even though we disliked his actions and feelings toward our girls, the late Mr. Ossie Davis gave a superb job of acting as Melvin Porter, especially since his demeanor in life was opposite to what he was acting out. For all of his adult life he was very active in all civil rights activism along with his wife, the late Ruby Dee, they were quite a formidable team. Miss seeing and hearing both of them especially with all that is going on in our country at the moment and also the LGBTQ movment as well. Thanks for giving us a better side of Melvin.
