The Porter Name Is Not For Sale

Hot water fell over the back of Tina’s head, and she cupped her hands, the water pooling before she opened her fingers to let it flow and she watched as it circled the shower drain, her thoughts a whirl. Tilting her head back to let the stream cover her face then neck, she closed her eyes to think through her morning, her day, her life. So much change over the past year, so much still to come… like the ongoing, ever-present question of whether she was ready to let Henry move in permanently. He already spent most of his time here as it was.

Lately, she felt like she was hovering on the edge of a precipice; things were either going to change for the better… or … or… there were some decisions to make. And making decisions, especially big ones, terrified her. She felt unsettled. Not unhappy but not happy either… stagnant maybe, stuck definitely. Commitment never her forte.

With any luck, she would have an art show for the upcoming holidays. She needed to try something different. Getting the studio on solid footing financially meant she could have time to do some painting herself… already large abstract canvases with vibrant colors sat unfinished in a back room, stored for later… but later was becoming more and more permanent.

Hearing the bathroom door open, she rolled her eyes at the of a loud grunt from Henry as he opened the lid to the toilet, the sound of him urinating filling the room as he groaned with satisfaction. Sighing, she rinsed her hair, her thoughts scattered with the noise coming from his morning pee. Just great. The toilet flushed and he burped…

“Save some hot water for me, Hon. You get my dry cleaning like I asked?”

Rolling her eyes again, Tina turned the water off, pulling the curtain back to reach for her towel. “I did not. I told you yesterday that my meeting was running late. Put the seat down, please.”

Glancing at her over his shoulder, Henry smiled then stretched, scratching his belly as he eyed her up and down. “You look so sexy… get back in the shower, Sweetheart. I was hoping you’d stay in there with me…hubba hubba…”

    1. What a pleasant surprise. One of my favorite films and my favorite author. I cannot wait to see how this unfolds. Your style of writing reads as one would imagine people speaking to one another. I’m not sure I ever mentioned that before. It flows so naturally. Well done!!

    2. Thrilled to see a new story from you, BK! I’m already hooked. Can’t wait to read more. I LOVE their names Soul Painter and Intrepid Traveler Of The heart – Perfect. Enjoyed Tina and Alice’s conversation – it says it all.

    3. What a nice surprise! I can’t remember a second of the movie, only that James Stewart starred in the 40’s version The Shop Around the Corner.
A very promising first chapter, BK. Love it already. You had me in stitches with the Henry dialogue. Tina! Please just get the keys to your flat back and throw him out! ;).
      Looking forward to more.
