    The Roommates: Chapter 35

Sidney frowned at this news as she searched her mind to try and understand what could have happened in her discussion with Bette. Tina, I dont know what happened. We were talking. We were both a little upset and then I.I was telling her that she didnt think of my feelings when she was making all of these decisions. Then she really upset. She was pretty..inconsolable. Until you Sidneys words trailed off and she met Tinas eyes.

Tina nodded, her subtle movement filling in Sidneys blank. Sidney continued. So, that was it. I didnt expect that kind of response. Ive never seen Bette so upset before. I think I just struck a nerve.

They were silent a moment as Tina tried to play connect the logic dots with this new bit of information. She came to the realization that a few dots were still missing. Tina sighed heavily and said, I dont know. I just wish I could make this better.

You havent talked to her about this?, asked Sidney.

No. She seems really vulnerable right now. Im worried that if I ask her, shell have another breakdown. But it seems like thats what Im going to have to do. Shes really starting to scare me.

There was guilt written all over Sidneys sun-kissed face. Tina, Im sorry if I caused this. Im sorry you have to clean up the mess I made. Please let me know if theres anything I can do to help.

Tina smiled slightly. Sidney, like I said, I dont know what the two of you discussed. But, I want you to know that Bette really did give you all she could. I.I wanted to be with her weeks ago, but she was committed to you. Did she talk to you about her mom?

Sidney shook her head. Not really. Just that she had gotten remarried and wasnt really around much any more.

Tina chewed her lip nervously; surprised that Bette hadnt shared this bit of her past with Sidney. Well, she places a lot of pressure on herself when it comes to relationships. Shes very serious about commitment. She felt horrible, like shed really let you down. She never meant to hurt you. She did everything she could to be faithful to you.

Sidney held back her tears and looked away. They fell into an uncomfortable silence and Tina felt as if shed overstepped her bounds and stood to leave.

    Tina?, said Sidney.

    Yeah.

Thanks for telling me that. I dont even deserve to know that much. I hope things get better with Bette. Let me know if I can help.

Tina nodded. I will. Ill see you around.

As she walked away and made it back her meeting, the scattered fragments of Bettes undoing began to make sense. Discussing Bettes mom with Sidney had jarred Tinas memory. Tina realized that Bettes depression had little to do with Sidney and everything to do with Tina.

    1. This is without a doubt one of the most popular stories on the site right now…and with VERY GOOD REASON…because it is one of the best stories on this site, period!

    2. Seriously…you have got to win an award for this story…no one deserves it more than you!! Gosh, I envy those two…I wish I could find someone as special as Tina or Bette. I just recently came out to my best friend…it took me an entire year, but I did it. Your story gives me hope…please do continue;-) Aloha!

    3. Bette has got to open up to Tina. I hope Tina figures out what’s wrong with Bette before they leave school. I really love this story and I think you do an awesome job with it. Can’t wait for the next update.

    4. MTS, it’s not fair to other writers that you give us sentences like this: “And so they sat there, in the dining room of Reiber Hall, with Tina’s loving touch and soothing whispers infusing Bette with the reassurance and calmness needed to replenish her downtrodden and broken spirit.” I mean, really. How could you put together words any more perfectly? Geez. Simply wonderful use of language.
I hope all of you who were so scathing about Sidney can let up a little. Not that Sid’s my gal, but for the sake of rounding her out, I’m glad that you made her compassionate in this chapter. Thanks for another marvelous read.
