The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 2

“Tina, are you getting dressed?” she asked.

“Yes, Mom. I’m on my way to the shower.”

“Well, let’s get a move on. We don’t want to be late. You have fresh towels in your bathroom already,” said Tracy.

    “Thanks.”

Tina’s mother gave a small smile before rushing off in the direction she’d come.

The last thing Tina wanted was for Tracy to reappear. With a deep sigh, she walked down the hall and into the bathroom she’d always shared with her older sister, Kaitlyn. The elder Kennard sibling was not due back for another two weeks. They’d just miss each other and Tina wasn’t too torn up about that.

Almost an hour later, the family of three pulled into the nearly full parking lot of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Tina sighed to herself as she looked up at the cross sitting atop the red-bricked church building.

They were nearly to the front steps when Tracy hissed in Tina’s ear, “Did you have to wear pants?”

Tina replied, “Mom, I couldn’t find any of my skirts this morning.”

Tracy shook her head. “Nice, Tina. Your first Sunday back and you’re walking around in slacks like a man.”

Stephen walked up and slid a warm around both Kennard women, placing himself in between them. “Ladies, let’s shelve the wardrobe discussion. You both look wonderful.”

Tracy huffed and Tina smiled to herself. Tina was happy that she’d scored an “annoyance” victory against her mother. She’d wanted to wear pants. As early as she could remember, her mother had instilled in her that ladies always wore dresses and skirts on Sunday mornings. And Tina’s choice of wardrobe was her taking a stand against the status quo.

The trio made it inside the hallowed walls of the sanctuary and sat down near the back of the room. Service had already begun. Tina settled into her seat on the red-lined pew and spotted her grandparents and other long-term members of the church. They were all faces she’d grown up knowing. In the crowd were other young people home from college. The scene whirled around her like a kaleidoscope of Christian colors and she sat quietly, watching the carefully orchestrated proceedings through a new enlightened lens of perspective.

    1. i totally know how tina feels of not belonging, i hope that the distance and their families won’t stay on the way of B&T’s love and future

    2. I’m so happy to see you back with this story, MTS! I hope the distance and Tina’s family doesn’t keep the love between Bette and Tina from blossoming! PPS

    3. I always feel elated everytime I see you post. The way you express each character’s emotion is so realistic. Tina’s feelings of not belonging among her family and their community and Bette’s discomfort around her own mother are valid emotions made palpable by your beautiful writing. Thanks for posting!

    4. i think most of us(if not all) can at some point of our lives totally relate to that feeling of not belonging, and you, Ms MTS, have portrayed it perfectly… please keep’em coming, you’ve been missed! ^^,

    5. Glad to see you updating. Guess that’s the one positive with L-free Sundays… all the lovely writers are back posting! Not feeling too good about Tina’s mom, but enjoying your story.

    6. Hello MTS, So good to have you back. I am just loving Baby B and T. There is such an air of innocence between them. It is appealing and refreshing. Good to see Bette so out of her comfort zone yet looking towards the future. Kit was great in supporting her baby sis through this unsettling time and prompting Melvin to reach out to his daugther before he risked losing her forever. INteresting to see that Bette is finding it diffcult to bond with her mother. So lifelike. Given the time they were apart a few short days cannot overcome a lifetime separated. ON the other hand, Tina all too well realizes that her mother knows something is worng. The parading of her at church is another typical action of proud parents. Like the prodigal child, the fatten calf will be slain and celebrations will follow. Just hope that Tina can keep it together long enough. Can’t wait to see what message Bette leaves for her lover. Sweet and loving I bet. Thank you so much for this amazing adventure. Your Loyal Fan.

    7. Welcome back, dear friend. It is AWSOME to have you posting again this lovely and amazing saga of Baby B and Tiny T. Thanks for bringing us such a delightful story. PPS Sincerely, Lucero & Marsha – From Mexico City

    8. Poor tina, eventually she will tell her mom and i don’t think it will be a pretty site either.her mom is very smuthering… great update! :)

    9. glad to see you back after the absence….when i first came across TLW fan fiction, this story was among those that got me hooked on this site, thx for the update!

    10. wonderful writing as usual, happy dance. I feel real sad for Tina. Its so hard to realise that u don’t fit in your parents’ world any longer yet not want to hurt them and all the time u r missing your gf. Liking Janice. Think Bette got the better deal in the parents’ stakes even if things have been rough for her. At least she is openly out. Tina has to stay in. She must be miserable. PPS.

    11. Poor Tina! Bette definitely is getting the better side of things being in NYC and getting to know her mother. What is the deal w/ Tina’s mom anyway? Is she really this jealous that Tina has someone new in her life or is it that the someone new is a woman? PPS!

    12. Good chapter. Poor Tina, don’t like her mother now and hope her father is a nice man and will be on Tina’s side. Happy for Bette that she is spending time with her mom!
