    The Set Up (18)

It was late Monday afternoon when Tina had reclined in her chair. Like most Mondays, it had been chaotic, but still all she could seem to think about was Bette. She ran her fingers through her hair – still clipped up – and sighed as the bell rang.

Not long after, a knock on the door snapped her out of her thoughts, and she smiled at the teacher in her doorway, standing up to properly address her. “Alice.”

“Hey, Vice. Just thought I’d drop by.”

“You can call me Tina, you know.”

“Ah, Vice just has a sort of ring to it. And hey – I know you’re off or whatever, but I have something that I’ve gotta say.”

    “Sure, take a seat.”

Alice didn’t even bother with the door, as there weren’t any students in the office anyway. She sat in the seat, but pulled herself to the edge of it. “I have to warn you. It’s just …” She stopped herself short after seeing Tina’s goofy-looking grin. Alice couldn’t help but smile herself. “What are you smiling about? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you look so happy.”

“It’s nothing,” Tina chuckled, closing her eyes momentarily to the memories of the picnic she’d had with Bette and Angelica. “Nothing.”

“So it wouldn’t be that girlfriend of yours, hey?”

“Girlfriend?” Tina asked, quickly looking over to the door to make sure no one had heard. But it was so busy all through the office that she knew no one had.

“Anyway, I told you to hang onto that woman – and don’t let yourself be fooled.”

“What?” Tina chuckled, sitting up in her chair. “What on earth are you talking about?”

“Just … don’t let yourself be played, you know? I saw someone Friday that reminded me, and … I just thought I should warn you.”

    Tina furrowed her eyebrows.

“Listen, a while back – when I was sort of newly … ‘out’, I was played into thinking that I was getting myself into a relationship. But you know how it is. She never called me back. She ignored my calls even, and it totally broke my confidence. I just don’t want that happening to you. That’s all.”

Tina smiled genuinely. “That’s really sweet of you, Alice, but I plan on holding onto this one. She’s just not like that.”

    1. Well, the apparently poorly-kept “secret” is out, and the world has kept on spinning. Angie didn’t seem all that bothered, heh. I guess the next thing is for Tina (and Bette) to each fully come to term with Bette’s past… Alice’s story wasn’t all that awful, but it’s amazing how many people think they’re in a “relationship” after sleeping with someone the first day of knowing them. Bette hasn’t treated Tina that way, and she’s shown how much she’s not the woman she used to be. Thanks for the post!

    2. The pages just flew by. You can’t change anyone. You can only change yourself. Bette wants to change. Angie is pretty observant. Tina has been hurt by her ex-husband so she wants to protect Angie from the reality of her relationship.Tina needs to be more forthright so that Angie doesn’t think that her relationship w/Bette is illicit or immoral.

    3. Loving each update. It’s great that Tina is willing to hear Bette out instead of running in the opposite direction. And she’s understandably cautious. But it would be nice if she showed that she wants to know more about what made/makes Bette the complex creature she is. Tina thinks she’s been putting Bette’s feelings ahead of her own, but Bette is doing all the tip-toeing! OK, waiting for the next chapter. :-)

    4. Bette shouldn’t have to keep explaining herself. Although she was a major douche back then, she seems remorseful now. I admire the fact that she owns up to her douchiness and not blame it on some broken past. Which we often hear about, but I offer “pay the good deeds forward, not the bad ones”. Maybe Bette should apologize to Alice, god knows she’ll acquire some frequent flyer miles if she went after every women screwed over but she can cross one name from her little blackberry book. Thanks for the awesome post GR 😘

    5. Agree with azmama …you can’t change another person. But Bette has an external goal that motivates her: Tina and Angie. I’m curious what Bette’s internal goal will be, what motivates her to change other than her prize of getting Tina. Love this story! Thank you!

    6. Thanks for the update. I’m so glad Tina is trusting Bette and really trying to get over the “player” image she has in her head. It is always going to be a part of Bette and it will come up from time to time but as long as Tina continues to be open with Bette about her fears they should be okay.As far as Angie, it seems that Tina has gotten into a habit of treating her as an equal in some areas instead of a child. She does need to consider Angie’s feelings but she should not let Angie dictate the direction or pace of her relationship with Bette. As adults, they should be making the decisions and helping Angie adjust to whatever it is they are doing.

    7. I think its hilarious how much Angie noticed. Most parents don’t give their kids enough credit. I noticed a lot at that age but I love how mature Angie was about it all, she’s such a special kid. I also agree about Bette realizing that by hiding who they are in front of Angie, they’ll only confuse her and think loving either woman is wrong. I think every child should have an open mind about what’s out they’re but free to make their own decisions in life. Tina’s decision to speak to Bette before seeing Alice showed how much they’ve grown as a couple. Tina trusted Bette to tell her the truth and I love that, even more that Bette was completely honest even though she was afraid it would cost her Tina. She put as much faith in her relationship as Tina. Ahhh love this. Thank you GR !!

    8. Thanks for the posting! I love that adults don’t understand that kids aren’t that dumb. They do pay attention to things that the adults do with each other. They see things in movies and on TV and their world is much more open to intimacy than it used to be. I like Bette’s feelings that hiding things will give Angie the wrong impressions of the intimacy between them. Adults forget they they are the role models for which kids learn about relationships… and we wonder why they are so screwed up sometimes. Think about it adults… Be a better role model and teach them how to have good relationships with others… that is in your job description. Read the fine print.

    9. LOL … I find Tina’s reaction on being “caught” by Angie is so funny :-D luckily she only saw Bette leaving, not really “caught” them in any compromising situation :-p it’s amazing to realized that simple act like showing or hiding your affection towards your spouse is actually a big thing for kids and they do pay attention! and its amazing to have Bette being so perceptive on Angie’s behavior/reaction… Great approach GR! Looks like all of them growing together now :-) and would that mean Tina will be more open about her feeling and closeness with Bette in front of Angie!? ;-) thanks GR for the update… It seems too short while in fact it is a 12 pages update! :-p maybe I am too greedy, but what can I say? it’s simply because your writing is so good GR! :-) PPVS ;-)

    10. Hello GrindRight”There’s no salvation for me now. I believe is the one line from the song Lover to Lover that shows up in this chapter. Now regarding those extra points for finding it. Use yourimagination Seduction is Patient. Thanks for posting.
