    The Set Up (24)

“You’re late,” Tina whispered, wiping the tears from her lips as she sobbed again, a little quieter.

But when Bette tried to step closer and explain, Tina backed up.

“You said you’d be here for dinner!”

Change tactics! Change tactics! Bette swallowed hard. “Hunny … I’m sorry. I got all held up. I forgot to call.”

“I made everything!” Tina cried, pointing to the fridge. “And now it’s all ruined. I wanted you to be here … I wanted you to be with me …”

“I’m here,” Bette insisted sadly, wishing she had known. She would have been on time. She always tried to be on time, but she didn’t let herself get down about it when Tina was in such a mood. Bette had her own lapses in judgement, and Tina was always there for her. Tina was always just as supportive. “T, it’s okay.” She stepped closer when anyone else would have slowly backed away. “I love you, and I’m not going anywhere.”

“I look terrible,” Tina mumbled into her hands, her back to the wall as she slowly slipped down to the floor. “I tried so hard today … I promise …”

“I know,” Bette whispered, able to undo all of Tina’s anxiety by just being close with her, rubbing her back in little circles.

“Nothing happened … and at work with dinner …” Tina mumbled, none of it making any sense as she tilted her head forward and let Bette hold her that way.

Bette got down onto her knees to offer Tina some support, finally helping Tina back up to her feet. And with both arms around her, Bette held Tina in a long embrace in the kitchen, letting Tina cry it out.

While it was hard to hear or see her mother crying, Angelica snuck out because she’d heard Bette’s voice, and she hadn’t understood how she helped. So the girl had snuck down the hall to watch them – to see what magic occurred to soothe her mother’s overwhelming stress.

And it turned out, it wasn’t magic at all, but a trusting love. The relationship Bette had with her mother was healthy – the way a relationship should be – with both partners respecting and caring for one another. It was how Angelica learned so early on that everyone deserved respect in a relationship, and to be loved. Really loved.
