    The Set Up (24)

“You don’t know what you’re doing …” she teased.

“Angelica. Sleep,” Bette emphasized, shaking her head as she just left everything on her desk and picked up her purse. “Love you. Have a good night.” She often exchanged such affectionate phrases with Angelica. They both had come to enjoy it.

    “Love you.”

Bette was hurrying out of her office when James called out to his boss. “Hey, I uh … I knew you were on the phone, but …”

“What is it, James? Spit it out,” Bette encouraged, searching in her purse for her car keys as he tried again.

“Earlier … Umm … Tina called.”

Bette put her purse down on the counter, looking at him. “James.”

“She was upset about fifteen minutes ago! I’m sorry,” he insisted, shrugging, “I didn’t wanna interrupt your conversation – I knew you were on with a big client.”

Sighing was customary at such moments, but she’d really learned to control her temper. She’d learned that it didn’t help anyone to react so explosively – not even herself – so she folded her arms and looked at him pointedly. “It’s okay, James. But next time, if Tina’s upset, I wanna hear about it right away. Okay?”

    “Of course.”

“I’m leaving for the night,” Bette explained, finally getting her keys to swing her purse over her shoulder again and turn on her heels for the door. Letting him just that easily off the hook. “You’re done, too. Don’t forget to lock this place up! I’ll be in tomorrow for eleven.”

She was worried all the way over to Second-Home, what she liked to call Tina’s place. She even sat in her car for a few minutes to plan out just what she would say, and how to say it. When Tina was in one of her rare but explosive moods, she had to step very lightly. And being late to begin with? – She wasn’t off to a good start.

“T?” she asked gently after opening the door – having a key to the house. She gently closed it behind her as she heard sobbing coming from the kitchen. She immediately put everything down and stepped in to see Tina hovered over the sink – her make-up ruined and her hair a mess.
